“We always had a deaf character in the script, but John really pushed for them to hire Millicent. She came to set and taught everyone sign language. It was really amazing and brought an extra depth to the film.”
In an interview with Inside Hook, Krasinski shared,
“She comes from a family where everyone else can hear, so I said, ‘What does that feel like?’”
As he learned about her life experiences, Krasinski was able to understand the psyche behind her character in the movie. The experience made Simmonds’ mother emotional.
Krasinski recalled,
“And watching her mom sort of cry at that moment, ‘I’ve always wondered what it would be like to be my daughter, and you finally delivered it for me.’ And I cried hard.”
The impact of the actress in the film was phenomenal as she brought authenticity to the role.
Millicent Simmonds’ dialogue made John Krasinski emotional in A Quiet Place
Millicent Simmonds, who is deaf in real life, did a remarkable job in the movie. She also taught sign language to the cast and crew members. The actress also made a pivotal suggestion for the climax scene of the film. It was part of the final cut.
As per the original script, John Krasinski’s character Lee was only meant to sign “I love you.”
However, Simmonds suggested that he should also sign “I have always loved you,” which made the actor cry.
She told Metro,
“At the end when he signs, ‘I love you.’ I said I think he needs to say, ‘I’ve always loved you.’ Because that covers the difficult period. Then when I suggested that he cried.”
The film was appreciated by fans and critics. It grossed $350 million worldwide. A sequel of the film was made in 2020 which grossed $297 million worldwide. There are talks about the production of A Quiet Place 3.
