In less than 72 hours, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will be making its way into theaters all around the world and we can’t wait to feel the heat. He has time and again challenged filmmakers with a vision that is unnaturally ahead of time. But with Oppenheimer, he takes us back.
Famously known to work with actors who can grasp the depth of his understanding of a story, Nolan has made a few changes this time around.
Oppenheimer has put together a cast that does not follow the traditional pattern that Nolan likes to follow. After almost two decades of working together, Cillian Murphy made his way as the lead.
Christopher Nolan, in the last two decades of filmmaking, has set the stage for most actors to experience stratospheric success. Only after having around a super celebrity like Robert Downey Jr. who has already been there did he realize something.
Only Robert Downey Jr. Could Match Christopher Nolan’s Stature
Marvel Studios becoming a conglomerate has Robert Downey Jr. to thank. With Iron Man (2008), Marvel positioned itself to be the most successful and sought-after franchise to work with.
After his last heroic act in Avengers: Endgame, Downey Jr’s potential could only be justified by working alongside a brand as huge as Nolan himself.
Nolan spoke with Total Film and is all-praises for Downey Jr’s craft.
“I’ve always known since I first met him, that he is one of the greatest actors, not just of his generation, but of all time.”
Downey Jr. playing Lewis Strauss made Christopher Nolan realize the range an actor of his caliber can present. Nolan also acknowledged that working with a highly experienced star can help him maximize his vision.
Christopher Nolan Wants To Work With Robert Downey Jr. Again
It comes as no surprise that Downey Jr. had such a huge impact on Nolan that he would probably miss no chance to collaborate with the 58-year-old actor again. He added –
“I’ve been waiting for the project, and I know he has too, where we can collaborate with him as the lead, and I could put the most enormous weight – cinematic weight – on his shoulders, and watch him carry that burden.”
Just a little glimpse of his character that we saw from the initial trailer was enough to highlight the sweeping performance that we would get to witness.
Coming out of the titanium suit and jumping onto ship Nolan must have been a drastic change for Downey Jr, but he had already shouldered the weight of the MCU for a decade.
As much as we’d love for Downey Jr. to bring forth Christopher Nolan’s vision to the cinemas as the lead, for now, we have to make do with him showcasing his gravity in the upcoming Oppenheimer, which opens July 21.
