“I’ve always been a big Madden fan”: Dwayne Johnson Bringing “Most Badass” Video Game Movie After $428M ‘Rampage’ Failed to Make a Splash?

There are probably very few franchises left where Dwayne Johnson hasn’t dipped his toes in. From comic book franchises like DC to racing ones like Fast and Furious, and even video games like Doom and Rampage, The Rock has tried it all. But he isn’t done yet.

The actor has made his name by starring in action films. However, there’s one medium he wants to tap more into- video games. After all, there’s almost an abundance of action-oriented projects that he can make into live-action films. Johnson even announced that there are plans to make another video game-based project.

“I’ve always been a big Madden fan. I can’t tell you which game in particular, we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years. I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world. Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends—but really we’re just going to make a great movie.”

Even though, The Rock said that an announcement was going to be made in 2022 itself, nothing as such has been revealed from his camp. So has the project been shelved? The success of HBO’s The Last of Us has shown that video game adaptations can work if done right. However, even before Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, Dwayne Johnson proved that too.

Doom was an outright flop at the box office. But Dwayne Johnson didn’t stop. He came back with Rampage in 2018. The film had a $120 million budget and grossed almost $428 million worldwide. It was based on a series of games by Midway Games where the player was a monster trying to destroy the city while evading the military and police.

However, the film was a bit different because audiences followed a giant mutated ape. As such, Johnson does know how to make a successful video game film. In an interview with Collider the Black Adam star said:

“I think with like any movie, it all starts with the story, it all starts with characters. I can tell you the idea of making Rampage I thought was interesting, just because I love the game. Like so you love something, it’s like, ‘Yeah, let me see!'”

Rampage did decently at the box office even though it couldn’t enter the zeitgeist like The Last of Us. So maybe the Red Notice star is trying again with a Madden-like action game? After all, there are multiple gaming franchises he can adapt like Fortnite, Need for Speed, etc. It now remains to be seen if the announcement comes or not.

Rampage is available on Netflix.
