Actress Christina Ricci is known for her exceptional talent of portraying the character with a dark edge, including Wednesday Addams in The Addams Family. Starting out as a child star, she has worked in Hollywood for a long time, which also allowed her to make friends and connections with her fellow actors and industry professionals. One of these connections also included the Hollywood star Johnny Depp.
Ricci first met the Pirates of the Caribbean star when she was nine years old and has starred alongside him in multiple movies. However, the actress has shared that she felt weird while playing his love interest in the 2000 romantic drama The Man Who Cried.
Christina Ricci Felt Weird Filming Romantic Scenes With Johnny Depp
Christina Ricci met Johnny Depp while starring alongside Winona Ryder and Cher in the 1999 comedy film Mermaids. Almost a decade later, she starred alongside the Hollywood star in Tim Burton’s 1999 fantasy horror Sleepy Hollow.
Just a year after Sleepy Hollow, she was again cast opposite Depp in the 2000 romantic drama The Man Who Cried. Ricci plays the lead character Suzie, an adopted Jewish girl living in Paris, and attempts to flee to the United States in order to find her father.
However, unlike the 1999 movie, it featured some intimate scenes between Depp and Ricci’s characters. And the Monster actress felt weird for several reasons while filming the romantic scenes for the film. The Man Who Cried was the first role of her career that required her to film an intimate scene.
And filming it with the Public Enemies star made her even more uncomfortable as he has always been like a brother to her. “I’ve known Johnny so long. He’s protective of me as an older brother, and it’s weird to think of having s*x with him,” she said at the 2000 Venice Film Festival. Despite feeling irritated, the co-stars got along well and were able to laugh it off.
Johnny Depp Also Felt Uncomfortable in Sleepy Hollow
Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci shared the screen for the first time in Tim Burton’s 1999 movie Sleepy Hollow. The movie featured them as lovers, Ichabod Crane and Katrina Van Tassel. The film did very well at the box office, grossing $206 million at the box office.
However, despite its massive success, many noted the lack of chemistry between Depp and Ricci. And Depp later revealed the reason behind it as he talked about starring alongside the Casper star during a press conference. As per The Guardian, Depp shared that he has known Ricci since she was 9 years old, and it was uncomfortable for him as well to play her love interest.
“I met Christina when she was nine years old, and when you have to regard that person you met at the age of nine as a love interest, it’s a little uncomfortable-unsettling,” he said. He further stated that they had to allow them to reach the state where things were not that twisted while working on the 1999 movie.
