If there’s one thing Emily Blunt hates more than anything else, it’s her kids talking in an American accent.
Blunt has been married to The Office star John Krasinski for over a decade and the pair even have two beautiful daughters, Hazel, 8 and Violet, 6. With one British parent and one American though, the kids’ accents are bound to fluctuate every now and then. But Blunt absolutely despises it when her children start to sound like their father.
The award-winning actress is crystal clear on whose cultural roots she wants to be passed down to their kids out of her and Krasinski’s, more in terms of their accents than anything else.
Emily Blunt Doesn’t Like it When Her Kids Sound American
Being a woman of British descent and marrying an American actor isn’t always easy. Ask Emily Blunt, she’d agree.
While the Edge of Tomorrow star loves her husband to no end, she isn’t too thrilled when it comes to their daughters picking up their father’s accent instead of hers. Blunt admitted to the same once on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon when the host asked her whose accent the kids were getting out of her and John Krasinski.
“Well, Hazel had my accent for a really long time and would say things like ‘wohter,’ which I was really proud of. And then the other day she goes, ‘Can I have some water?’ And I went ‘It’s w-oH-ter,’ and she was like, ‘No, it’s w-aAh-ter.’ I was like ‘No!'”
Since the family had been residing in Brooklyn for most of their time, it wasn’t too bewildering for their kids to catch an American accent. But after spending most of 2017 in England and their kids attending school in London during the pandemic, Blunt started to give tough competition to her husband as Hazel and Violet adopted more British undertones while speaking.
Emily Blunt Was Thrilled When Her Kids Picked Up Her Accent
During the COVID pandemic, The Girl on the Train star’s daughters was being schooled in London, something which vividly influenced their accents as well. And Blunt, 39, was the happiest mother on the planet when she learned of this. When she appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, she revealed how she was “over the moon” to hear her little one talk in a British accent.
“They’ve actually been in a proper school with school uniforms. Miraculously, they’re sounding quite British, which I’m completely over the moon about.”
Blunt and Krasinski rarely put their daughters in the middle of the spotlight and have always been more inclined towards raising them privately. In an old interview with Good Morning America, the Mary Poppins Returns star talked about the same as she remarked how she and Krasinski wanted to raise their kids more as parents and less as famous celebrities. That’s parenting 101 right there.
