After four days of being lost at sea, OceanGate’s missing submersible is believed to have suffered a “catastrophic implosion” with all the passengers aboard pronounced dead. The tourist sub had ventured out on an expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic when it went missing on June 18, 2023.
In the wake of this gut-wrenching tragedy, James Cameron, the director who helmed 1997’s Titanic portraying the infamous shipwreck, along with many other notable names of Hollywood, have shared their condolences, mourning the loss of the Titan submarine.
James Cameron Reacts to the Titan Submersible Disaster
The Titan submersible operated by OceanGate Expeditions that went missing in international waters a few days back is now detected to have imploded, resulting in the death of the pilot as well as the four passengers. In light of the same, one of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmakers, James Cameron, has spoken up about the missing submarine and its heartbreaking loss.
Talking to ABC News, the Oscar-winning Titanic director remarked just how dangerous such a voyage had been, to begin with. These tourist expeditions that OceanGate has been conducting since 2021, as per Cameron, 68, have been “too experimental to carry passengers,” a concern that has been voiced by many among the deep submersible community.
He also noted the eerie similarity between the Titan submersible and the historic Titanic that sank on its maiden voyage in 1912 after slamming into a deadly iceberg.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night. And many people died as a result.”
“I think it’s just astonishing,” he remarked. “It’s really quite surreal.”
Hollywood Celebrities Lament the Tragic Loss of Life
Joy Behar, a comedian and the co-host of ABC’s daytime talk show, The View, voiced Cameron’s alarming remarks about the Titan accident, citing its striking resemblance with Titanic. “That’s the irony of it,” she said on The View. “They’re going to see the same thing is happening to them. It’s very sad and scary.”
Real Housewives of New York City alum Bethenny Frankel, who also seems to share the predominant belief that the odyssey itself was “a bad idea,” shared her two cents when the submarine went missing in the depths of the ocean. “It’s so tragic and so sad and so terrible. God bless those poor people,” she said in a video posted on her Instagram.
Meet Cute actress Kaley Cuoco too took to her Instagram to express her distress following the petrifying news of the submersible calamity. “This has kept me up the last few nights and made me sick,” she posted on her social media account.
The U.S. Coast Guard confirmed the heart-wrenching news of the Titan wreck and the loss of its passengers in a conference on June 22.
