James Gunn disclosed his obsession with Star Wars during the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. The movie premiered on the night of May 4th, celebrated as Star Wars Day paying homage to the iconic franchise. Gunn also revealed that when he took on the first Guardians movie, he aimed to evoke the same feeling in people that Star Wars made him feel as a child.
The Slither director admired the Star Wars franchise for its outlandish characters and extraordinary locations. However, Gunn had one issue with the fans of the space opera – not giving due respect to one of Star Wars’ best films.
James Gunn Revealed His Favorite Star Wars Movie
James Gunn in an earlier tweet revealed his favorite Star Wars movie. James Gunn stated that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is one of the most underrated Star Wars outings that deserves more recognition. The DC CEO might be right considering Rogue One is less talked about, even after receiving critical acclaim and garnering $1.057 billion worldwide. In a now-deleted tweet, Gunn wrote:
“I don’t know why Rogue One is trending, but I’m glad it is, as it’s the most underrated Star Wars anything.”
The Felicity Jones starrer explores the story of a rebel group who embarks on a daring mission to steal the plans of Death Star from the planet Scarif. The film acts as a prequel to the first movie in the Star Wars original trilogy, A New Hope. In the 1977 film’s opening crawl, there is a reference to the first Rebel Alliance victory against the empire, which was developed into the movie.
However, none of the Rogue One team survives the events of the film, essentially making them a kind of suicide squad. No one knows better about suicide squads with morally ambiguous characters than James Gunn who directed the 2021 DCEU movie, The Suicide Squad.
James Gunn Resonated With The Theme Of The Movie
One can’t help but notice the underlying connections between James Gunn’s projects and Rogue One. The Star Wars project may have even inspired Gunn to direct the $168 million movie The Suicide Squad, where a bunch of criminals go on a suicide mission to save the island nation of Corto Maltese. The Super director’s Marvel venture, Guardians of the Galaxy, also features a group of intergalactic misfits who undertake adventures to protect the universe.
However, in contrast to Gunn’s films, Rogue One takes on a more serious and darker tone. This aspect even sets it apart from its preceding Star Wars projects. However, Gunn’s favorite Star Wars movie was not without its faults. Rogue One was criticized for its pacing and several characterizations, but the most notable criticism was for the digital recreations of the late actors Peter Cushing and Carrie Fisher.
Still, Rogue One stands head and shoulders above the prequel trilogy as well as the Han Solo film, as the best prequel to the original trilogy.
Rogue One is available for streaming on Disney.
