Developer Bethesda is renowned for making action RPGs set in sprawling open worlds positively teeming with life and things to do. But there’s something else they’re famous, or rather infamous, for: bugs. Games of the scope they make, whether it be The Elder Scrolls series or the Fallout series, have often launched with several bugs and glitches which have persisted in the game for several years. However, this time, Bethesda has a plan so that Starfield doesn’t share the same fate.

How does Starfield plan to escape the Bethesda bug curse?

When Starfield was first announced back in 2021, it came with the release date of November 11th 2022. But as we know, it suffered from a major delay with the new release date being September 6th 2023. That’s a time period of 10 months, which according to game director Todd Howard, is what the game needs to iron out bugs Bethesda is notorious for. Here’s what he had to say on the Starfield delay in an interview:

“And we’ve really spent most of this year, playing the game a ton over and over and making sure that it’s balanced, it’s as fun as possible, honing systems and interface. Obviously, bug fixing and all of those things, performance, and really getting it where we’re really, really sure and solid on what we’re putting out there for everybody.”

Elsewhere, Howard also noted that the delay allowed them to work with the best engineers at Xbox to make sure Starfield runs smoothly on the Xbox Series X/S.

What is the performance and frame rate of Starfield on Xbox consoles?

Perhaps to prevent some bugs and performance issues from arising in Starfield on the Xbox Series X and S, the game runs at a locked 30 frames per second. In terms of the resolution, Starfield is at 4k on the Xbox Series X and 1440p on the Xbox Series S. Todd Howard explained the decision:

“Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen. And we do want to do that. It’s 4K in the X. It’s 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30 [FPS], because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don’t want to sacrifice any of it. Fortunately in this one, we’ve got it running great. It’s often running way above that. Sometimes it’s 60. But on the consoles, we do lock it because we prefer the consistency. Right? Where you’re not even thinking about it. And we don’t ever want to sacrifice that experience that makes our games feel really, really special. So feels great. We’re really happy with how it feels even in the heat of battle. And we need that headroom because in our games, really anything can happen.”

In the same interview, Howard also denied rumors that they had been helped out by fellow developer id Software (who made the Doom series), instead saying that they helped out on the graphical side of things.
