“It’s shorter than The Last of Us 2”: Bethesda Spent 25 Years and $200 Million on ‘Starfield’ Only to Disappoint Fans With a 21 Hours Main Story

Bethesda Spent 25 Years and $200 Million on 'Starfield' Only to Disappoint Fans With a 21 Hours Main Story

Starfield has been in development for the past 15 years. With the release date almost knocking on our doors, players have very high expectations of the first new IP from Bethesda in almost 30 years. The game director, Todd Howard, had the idea about Starfield back in the ’90s, so it is safe to assume that the game has much to offer.

Recently, it’s been found that the main storyline of Starfield would take even less than 20 hours to beat. Fans have been somewhat dejected at this since even Last of Us 2 and other Bethesda titles like Skyrim or Fallout 4 have more storylines than this. For a game that has been in development for over two decades and with huge promises from the developers, Starfield has been quite underwhelming.

The storyline of Starfield can be done in under 20 hours. Assuming the players are focused on the main story with each subsequent New Game Plus run lasting around ninety minutes. However, being a space-themed RPG, the primary storyline contributes to a relatively tiny amount of the entire game’s content. Players already thinking of indulging in the ridiculous amount of side content can expect no less than 100 hours of intense space exploration.

How much extra content will be in Starfield?

Hines spoke about his experience regarding the extra content in Starfield with IGN,

“I’m at 150 [to] 160 hours on my current play through, and I haven’t even come close. There is so much stuff that I have intentionally not done.”

From Hines’ statement, it is simple to assume that Starfield will offer their players more than 200 hours of side content. Considering how Starfield offers such an immersive space exploration with over 1,000 planets across more than 100 star systems, it wouldn’t be surprising if players were more focused on the side content rather than the main story.

Is Starfield shorter compared to other Bethesda games?

Starfield is comparatively shorter than other games from Bethesda, like Fallout 4 and Skyrim. Both of these games had double the amount of storyline compared to Starfield. However, it matches the other two titles by providing players with plenty of side content. Bethesda has skillfully introduced these side contents to the players while they’re taking on the main story.

Despite players being disappointed at the length of the Starfield storyline, it’s rather remarkable for players who are novices to Bethesda games or the RPG genre in general. Players can choose the amount of content they want to experience. Rather than having to play forty or fifty hours just to experience the main story, Bethesda’s approach can help make Starfield much less intimidating.
