Throughout his career, Mel Gibson has appeared in a wide genre of films, where he has played some of the most iconic characters in the history of Hollywood. While there’s been only praise for Mel Gibson as an actor, as a person he has often been accused of anti-semitism, homophobia, racist remarks, and domestic violence that has often left people criticizing the actor and the films or TV Series, he works in. Recently, the actor was selected to play a major role in The Continental, a prequel to John Wick, where the Payback actor was backed by Basil Iwanyk, the executive producer of the series.
Mel Gibson Has The Support of The Producers In The John Wick Prequel
Mel Gibson’s appointment for The Continental in 2021 was met with immense backlash, especially due to being accused of racism and domestic violence. In the miniseries, Gibson will play the character of Cormac, the ruthless proprietor of the Continental.
During an exclusive interview with IGN, Basil Iwanyk, and Albert Hughes were asked if they had second thoughts while casting the actor. Iwanyk answered, “No,” and dismissed the question by clarifying his statement by saying, “I don’t think anybody could have fit better, let’s put it that way.”
The executive director shared his thoughts on the same question, stating that they cast the actor based on his skills as an actor, and his past does not give them second thoughts while casting him for the role of Cormac.
“No. I think he fit the role, he fit what we needed based on his film past. And I’ll leave others to debate the other stuff because it’s not a black-and-white issue, and I don’t want to be sound-bited and clickbait. That’s a tricky game to get into. I have my own personal beliefs in life and whatnot about everything, but I’m here to entertain.”
“And earlier in my career I wasn’t so careful. But there’s a weight that he brought, the stuff that he brought from his past roles and what he has done that we needed for this role. And I don’t think anybody could have fit better, let’s put it that way, just with his chops and his experience.”
While people can complain and share their views on why it is wrong to cast Mel Gibson for Continental, he has been backed by the executive producer and director of the series, which secures his place in the much-anticipated sequel.
Mel Gibson’s Anti-Semitic Comments Taint His Perfect Career
In 2006, The Patriot actress tainted his acting career due to his questionable remarks on the Jewish community. During the early hours, the actor was found driving his Lexus on the highway while allegedly drunk, later said anti-semitic comments that the LAPD had to cover up.
TMZ published the four-page police extract, where “Gibson blurted out a barrage of anti-semitic remarks about ‘f*cking Jews’.” He also yelled, “‘The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.’” His comments have made people hate him with ardent passion. Mel Gibson was released after he paid a hefty bail fee of $5000, but his comments on the Jewish community have brought immense media attention to him.
The Continental will release on 22nd September 2023.
