"It's hilarious": Aquaman 2 Director James Wan Trolls Frustrating Superhero Trend Popularized by Marvel

Being in the movie industry for 25 years, James Wan has made a name for himself. Though Wan has not worked in a wide genre of films, he is recognized by ardent movie watchers, as well as non-cinephiles because of his contribution to the horror genre. The filmmaker has a gift for storytelling and it is evident in his popular works such as Saw, Insidious films, The Conjuring 1 and 2, Dead Silence, and many more.

However, James Wan often tends to get out of his comfort zone of making supernatural films, hopping to make films with other popular franchises as well. His newest project Aquaman 2 has kept the fans hyped. The film had dropped a teaser trailer stating that the real trailer would be released in four days (now live on the DC YouTube channel). While this is a good marketing strategy, the Furious 7 director finds this trend to be quite silly.

James Wan Mocks The Practise of Mini-trailer for Films

When the 30-second teaser trailer for Aquaman II was released on the official YouTube channel of DC, it stated that the real trailer for the film would drop in four days. This technique is not a new practice, but it has been heavily used by Marvel exploiting it heavily before the pre-infinity war days.

Hilariously, when James Wan uploaded the teaser trailer on his Instagram handle, it invited a lot of positive responses and a funny comment from a fan stating, “Lol is this a f**king trailer for a trailer?” The director replied, “Haha. I know, it’s hilarious.” The reply from Wan was crafty because it led to several headlines about his answer, keeping the fans waiting for the real trailer, and if there’s something that they would like to notice in the real trailer.

The trailer is also important for some fans because they would be immensely interested in watching how many scenes Amber Heard will get. DC fans wonder if her screentime has been reduced after the backlash the film had received for not replacing the actress after she lost the defamation trial against Johnny Depp.

Zack Snyder’s DCEU had a successful start but it could not follow up on that success, as it started to fail in front of everyone’s eyes. But James Wan’s Aquaman helped to change the opinion of the franchise, as the film was immensely successful and popular among the masses. The first film earned $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-earning DCEU film of all time. And now, with Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom, he wants to repeat the same success that he had with the first film.

However, not only the Insidious director but also a lot of Johhny Depp fans are looking forward to the sequel because even after losing the defamation trial, Heard was not replaced in the film. But the Saw director shared in an exclusive interview with EW, how he had a different approach for the sequel so that it can perform well at the worldwide box office.

“I always pitched this to everyone from the get-go. The first Aquaman was Arthur and Mera‘s journey. The second movie was always going to be Arthur and Orm. So, the first was a romance action-adventure movie, the second one is a bromance action-adventure movie. We’ll leave it at that.”

With all said and done, Depp’s fans are excited for the film as the actress got a borderline exclusion from the film. Now, James Wan has to wait and see how the film is received by the audience and if it can repeat its success.
