In Ford v Ferrari, two big stars came together and delivered an outstanding performance on the big screen. Matt Damon and Christian Bale came out as real stars through the drama and sports movie. Both audiences and critics hailed both actors for their outstanding performances, but when word spread that Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt may have played the key roles in the film, many fans were taken aback.
Given Pitt and the Mission Impossible actor’s large fan bases, it’s fair to predict that if they collaborated on a film, it would become a cult favorite.
Joseph Kosinski says Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt read the script of Ford v Ferrari
The drama and sports movie Ford v Ferrari was released on 15 November 2019. Matt Damon played the character of Carrol Shelby, and Christian Bale was seen as Ken Miles. The movie collected $225 million at the box office. Before James Mangold took over the project, Joseph Kosinski was reportedly going to be the creative force behind the movie. When the 49-year-old filmmaker was working on the project it was called Go To Hell. During an interview, Kosinski mentioned that he brought two mega stars to the same table to read the script of the movie. While talking about the movie, the filmmaker said,
“I wouldn’t say we got close to production, but I got to the point where I had Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt at a table read, reading the script together. But we couldn’t get the budget to the number it had to be at, and it was the right number. So that was the one for me that got away. But I was thrilled to see that they ended up making an amazing version of it.”
Reports suggest that Tom Cruise was supposed to play the character of Carrol Shelby and Brad Pitt was selected for Ken Miles’s role.
Joseph Kosinski was full of praises for Matt Damon and Christian Bale
The Top Gun: Maverick director also spoke about how different his version of the 2019 movie would have been if he was directing it. According to the filmmaker, Mangold did an amazing job with the movie. Kosinski said he had a similar vision for the film but with a different star cast. The Only The Brave director said,
“The script was the same, and I think Mangold’s approach was generally how I was going to do it, which was real cars, real racing — obviously, making it with Tom, that’s the only way that it would be made. In some ways, what we did for ‘Top Gun,’ we were going to do for car racing with mounted cameras and all that.”
He further added,
“ I thought Mangold did an excellent version and I thought Christian Bale and Matt Damon nailed the characters, so that was a case where you go in going, ‘God, I hope this is good because I love the story so much.’”
The director mentioned that he watched the movie with the Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation actor. He further said
“It’s a weird thing to see someone make a movie of something that you had kind of got close to making.”
Even though the filmmaker couldn’t be a part of the movie, he praised the cast and the makers of Ford v Ferrari.
