Throughout the span of her 4-decade-long career, Helena Bonham Carter has found herself starring in several critically acclaimed projects, but there was one movie that grabbed her attention the most. Following the announcement of Ocean’s 8, a full female-led spin-off of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s trilogy, the Fight Club actress was totally engrossed in the project. Among all the factors that attracted her to the film, the most prominent one was the full female-led cast for the movie.
But despite her desire to star in the heavily star-studded Ocean’s 8, the actress initially wasn’t assured if she was going to land a job in the film.
Helena Bonham Carter had no idea whether she was going to be a part of Ocean’s 8
Despite finding the script for the movie hilarious, Helena Bonham Carter didn’t know if she was going to get cast in the heavily star-studded film with the likes of Anne Hathaway, Sandra Bullock, etc. The film would follow Sandra Bullock’s character, Danny Ocean’s ex-con sister, who would join forces with other biggies from the industry for the heist film, and Bonham Carter was fascinated by the premise. Even though Bonham Carter wasn’t assured about her casting in the film, she didn’t back away from supporting this vision nonetheless. She said,
“It’s a really good script, but I still don’t know if I’m going to be in it. But it’s a great script, and it’s great for women. Just hilarious. I’d better get on the phone. I have no idea if I’m in it. I better go and find out…I’ve got to contact them because I’ve finally emerged from doing a big job.”
Fortunately for the Fight Club star, she did eventually landed the role in the film alongside Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Rihanna.
Helena Bonham Carter was fascinated by the full-female star cast for the movie
Considering that Helena Bonham Carter was known for her versatility and was never part of a heist film, the movie’s premise was one of the factors that allured her to the project. But the main factor that fully grabbed her attention was the full-female star casting, as witnessing 8 female leads in a movie was a rare occurrence in Hollywood. The actress explained,
“I like to do things that I haven’t done before, and I’d never done a heist film. My castmates were another attraction because they’re so extraordinary. It’s not easy to find a film with one female lead, let alone eight, so it’s about time we had this kind of ensemble,”
Starring in the reinvention of the popular franchise was a fun experience for Carter and the movie itself succeeded at the box office, as the summer blockbuster made around $297M from a budget of $70M.
Ocean’s 8 is available to stream on Apple TV.
