"It'd be strange to continue without...": Chris Pratt Confirms Return to MCU as Peter Quill/Star-Lord if Marvel Asks Him to But Slyly Reveals His 1 Condition

Chris Pratt starrer Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 followed the path of its predecessors to become a critical and commercial success. One of the most successful film franchises within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, these films were helmed by James Gunn, who is now the CEO of DC Studios. Gunn’s screenplay and direction played a huge part in the success of the films.

Gunn earlier revealed that Volume 3 would be his final installment in the Guardians series. Furthermore, actors Zoe Saldana, who played Gamora, and Dave Bautista, who played Drax, also confirmed that they would not return to Marvel for another project. However, Chris Pratt has now suggested a possibility of his return to the role.

In the film, Chris Pratt plays Star-Lord, who assembles a group of extraterrestrial criminals to form the Guardians of the Galaxy to protect the universe. The third outing took on a more grimmer and darker tone than the earlier ones and left an emotional impact on the audience. Some viewers also perceived the film as a satisfying conclusion to the Guardians’ story in the MCU.

However, the Passengers actor has now hinted at a possible return as Peter Quill, only on one condition. Pratt recognized the impact James Gunn had on the film and admitted that continuing without James Gunn would be difficult. In an interview with Total Film, The Magnificent Seven actor stated that if another film were to be made, they would have to honor what Gunn had done for the first three films. The Wanted actor shared:

“It would be strange to continue [Star-Lord’s] story without James. […] He writes it, he directs it, he dreams up the music, it’s his imagination on screen. So, to continue to tell the story, it would really be important to honour what he’s done in the first three films and to honour what the fans have grown to love about the character and not simply do it because people might show up to pay for it, you know?”

Many fans may also agree with The Tomorrow War actor that Guardians wouldn’t be the same whiz-bang action-packed movie without James Gunn’s creative touch.

Chris Pratt has subtly expressed that he only wishes to do another Guardians film if James Gunn returns. However, with his newfound DC duties, the chances of this happening appear rather slim. The Jurassic World actor told Total Film that he would consider another Marvel project only if it “makes sense”. The Terminal List actor added:

“I don’t want to be cynical in the approach and if that’s the case, I just wouldn’t do it at all. So maybe down the road if something makes sense I would do it, but it would really have to check a lot of the right boxes.”

By right boxes, Pratt may be referring to the potential return of James Gunn in the future. This perspective also almost shuts the door for the possibility of the Guardians returning for the finale movies of the Multiverse Saga. For fans of this superhero team, all three Guardians of the Galaxy movies are now available for streaming on Disney.
