Harrison Ford is synonymous with Indiana Jones. Starting the franchise in 1981 with Raiders of the Lost Ark, the actor has continuously shown just how loyal he is to the iconic character. It has been forty-two years since he first donned the fedora and will soon be seen playing the character once again in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
However, all good things must come to an end someday, right? In recent times, it has been confirmed over and over again that Dial of Destiny will mark Harrison Ford’s retirement from the franchise. Naturally, fans of Indiana Jones have questions about the franchise’s future and whether the studios will recast the Indy or not for future endeavors. As it turns out Lucasfilm is against recasting the character after Harrison Ford says goodbye to him.
Harrison Ford’s Last Run as Indiana Jones
Appearing on Entertainment Weekly’s podcast, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talked about how Dial of Destiny will be the last we see of Harrison Ford as Indy. She also added that no one believes recasting the character for future movies is a good idea, including Steven Spielberg. Kennedy also confirmed that if the franchise continues without Ford, then it will only be through television.
“It’s Harrison’s last entry. That’s how we look at the Indy franchise. I mean, truthfully, right now, if we were to do anything, it might be in series television down the road, but we’re not doing anything to replace Indiana Jones. This is it. There are five movies that Harrison Ford did. And Harrison is so specific and so unique to creating this role. We just, Steven [Spielberg] agrees, we just wouldn’t do that.”
Ford also stated previously to Total Film that Dial of Destiny “will be the last time that he [Indiana Jones] appears in a film.” It’s the end of an era, isn’t it? Over the years, a whole generation grew up with Ford and Indy, and saying goodbye to the character will be one hell of an emotional ride!
Harrison Ford Talks About His Retirement
Dial of Destiny was screened at the Cannes Film Festival recently and a day later, Ford had something to say about putting the fedora down and saying goodbye to Indy. In a press conference, the actor stated that while he loves what the franchise did to his life, it’s time for him to rest.
“Is it not evident? I need to sit down and rest a little bit. I love t work, and I love this character, and I love what it brought into my life and that’s all I can say.”
Adding that he wants to “round up the story” with Indiana Jones 5, Ford stated that he has been lucky enough that he got to fulfill his dream of telling good stories with the franchise.
“I love the work. So I just want to work and I want to tell stories, good stories, and I have been so lucky in my life to have that opportunity.”
Dial of Destiny is surely going to be a bittersweet moment for the fans as on one hand they get to see Ford reprise the character, and on the other, they have to say goodbye to him with a heavy heart. However, Ford’s fans can see him as General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross as he is to appear in Captain America: New World Order.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will be released on June 30.
