Scarlett Johansson has been in the film industry since she was nine years old. She has been in around 70-odd films and while most of us would think it was easy for her, that’s a big No! At such a young age, she starred in a comedy-drama film North which was her first.
Going through the journey of rejection, Johansson got her first mild breakout role in the year 2001. She was still a teenager when she played a character called ‘Rebecca’ in the film Ghost World. Since then her journey has been spiraling upwards.
A Career Full Of Milestones And Rejections
Sometimes, the element of our damnation becomes our salvation. Scarlett Johansson’s ‘husky voice’ was almost always the reason why she lost out on major roles. According to her, when she went out for auditions for musical theater or for acting gigs as this cute blonde girl and also as an adult, casting directors would reject her citing that her voice was too deep for their liking.
In an interview with Candis Magazine, the 35-year-old actor shared the rejection part of her story. This is what she said –
“I trained to be a singer as a little kid. It was really tough for me to get into a musical theater due to my husky voice. So, acting seemed to be the next best thing.”
Scarlett Johansson has lost roles in critically acclaimed films like Mission Impossible III, The Great Gatsby, Gravity, Les Miserables, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and V for Vendetta to name a few.
“It was quite a disadvantage at that time. I got really frustrated by listening to casting directors asking me if my throat was fine.”
However, it was her ‘husky voice’ that got her the fame that she enjoys today. She has proven her mettle with romantic comedies, drama, horror, and sci-fi. Films such as, He’s Just Not That Into You, Jojo Rabbit, Marriage Story, and Lucy show how capable of an actor she is.
With MCU, Scarlett Johansson’s Career Skyrocketed
Her major breakout role that got her worldwide recognition came to be in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Iron Man 2 where she played an elite assassin working for S.H.I.E.L.D. Fans were absolutely blown away seeing the character with her remarkable acting chops and action sequences.
Johansson’s success story in the MCU landed her in a position where she was able to tap into her potential a lot more than usual. Also, an interesting fact about her is that she has been friends with Chris Evans since they were both teenagers. No wonder her on-screen chemistry with Evans looked unbelievably natural.
Her latest, Asteroid City has just been released on June 23 at Cannes.
