Catwoman released in 2004 and starring Halle Berry is often regarded as one of the worst movies ever. Even the cast and the crew regret their decision to be associated with such a movie. The lead actress Berry is no exception. The Gravity actress openly regretted doing that role when she received the highly infamous Golden Raspberry Award for Catwoman.
The Razzies or The Golden Raspberry Awards can be considered the polar opposite of The Oscars. During its journey of acknowledging the worst projects of every year, the 2005 edition of it presented Catwoman with seven Razzie nominations. The Halle Berry movie won four of them. But the audiences were even more surprised when the Oscar-winning actress went herself to receive it.
Halle Berry wants to forget about Catwoman
To date, there are several biggest names in the industry associated with The Razzies. These include stars such as Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Faye Dunaway, Jared Leto, Sandra Bullock, and many others. Most of these actors have also received the most prestigious Oscars for their movies. Halle Berry also falls into this list who won the Best Actress Award for Monster’s Ball in 2002.
After being the only African-American actress to win The Academy Award for Best Actress in a Lead Role, A Golden Raspberry was a big blow to the Boomerang actress’ career. But she showed immense confidence when she went to collect the award, similar to what Sandra Bullock did in 2010. Berry even showed her Oscar during her Razzie acceptance speech. She said:
“I want to thank Warner Brothers, for putting me in a piece of sh*t, godawful movie. It was just what my career needed. I was at the top, and then Catwoman just plummeted me to the bottom.”
While her speech clearly defined her perspective on the movie which almost ended her career, she also elaborated on why she decided to collect the award.
Why Halle Berry went to collect her Razzie?
The 56-year-old actress confidently admitted in an interview with Vanity Fair, that an award doesn’t define how much bad or good of a performer someone is. According to her, an Oscar doesn’t signify anyone as Best but only acknowledges them for their brilliant performance in the respective year. Similarly, a Razzie also can’t validate one as a terrible actor.
“I went to the Razzie [Awards] because I feel like we all take ourselves so seriously. If we get an award, if we get the Oscar, we somehow are made to feel like we’re somehow better than everybody else, but we’re really not. You were just chosen that year by your peers, and you were acknowledged for doing what they considered stellar work. If you find yourself face-to-face with a Razzie, does that mean you’re the worst actor there ever was? Probably not. You just got the piss taken out on you that year by a group of people that can.”
Halle Berry added that nobody deserves to be a good winner if they can’t be a good loser. So the Razzie wasn’t able to affect her much. It is also evident from her career as Catwoman didn’t put a stop to her career. She is also filming a project for Netflix titled Our Man from Jersey alongside Mark Wahlberg which is still waiting for a release date.
Catwoman can be streamed on HBO Max.
