Chris Pratt has appeared in some of Hollywood’s most prestigious film sets. A scary thing happened to him while filming Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1, though. Director James Gunn asked Pratt to dance on the most expensive set of his career, costing an average of $20,000 per minute to film.
This was a substantial sum of money for a movie set, especially considering the large number of extras and the actors’ elaborate alien makeup.

To film Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 1, the production team erected a massive outdoor set in Long Cross, England. There were dozens of extras on set; many spent hours getting their alien makeup just right. The production budget likely increased because of the 20-foot flames installed on the set.
Chris Pratt was approached by director James Gunn with an unusual request during filming: he wanted Pratt to dance on the movie’s lavish set. Pratt was initially surprised by the request because he wasn’t a very good dancer. The actor tried to get Gunn to let him hire a choreographer to teach him the moves, but Gunn said no.
“…all dressed in incredibly complicated alien makeup that would have taken them hours. And there are flames, 20ft in the air. And, you know, it was just costing like $20,000 a minute or something like that. And you’re going and they’re like, all right, now dance. And I was like, I think I might be blowing this. This whole movie is now I’m the one who’s just supposed to do I don’t even know how to dance, really. I was like, can you give me a choreographer? He’s like, ‘No, just dance.’ I was like, ‘Oh, God, I forgot that the scene was coming up.'”
Though he was nervous, Chris Pratt knew he had to give a good performance. The scene involved a dance-off between him and another actor in alien makeup. Despite his apprehension, Pratt gave his all to the scene because he knew it was crucial to the film’s success.
