In their pursuit of authenticity for their roles in The Devil Wears Prada, Anne Hathaway, and Emily Blunt embraced the challenge of shedding pounds to meet the film’s requirements. However, the weight loss journey proved particularly complex for Hathaway, as she initially received conflicting instructions, being advised to gain weight for her character. “The director and producers asked me to gain 10 lbs.,” Hathaway told People.
In an unconventional approach, Anne Hathaway managed to gain the necessary weight by indulging in a diet primarily composed of junk food and beer. However, her triumph was short-lived as she faced another challenge: shedding additional pounds to fit into the specific wardrobe required for her character in the film. Blunt empathetically joined Hathaway on their shared journey to shed weight, leading to emotional moments where both actresses were in tears.
“I was thin for my height. I was basically stuck with fruit, vegetables and fish. I wouldn’t recommend that. Emily Blunt and I would clutch at each other and cry because we were so hungry,” Blunt once told US Weekly.
Emily Blunt Felt Getting Slim Could Send The Wrong Message
During a revealing interview with Parade in 2009, Emily Blunt, renowned for her role in Jungle Cruise, candidly discussed the media’s powerful impact on young girls’ body image. Blunt disclosed that while she had maintained her regular thin size for most of her life, she made an exception for her role in The Devil Wears Prada, opting to become even thinner for the sake of authenticity.
“I am from a family of thin children, so I have always been OK with that. I’ve only lost weight for The Devil Wears Prada, and that was because my character was supposed to be on the edge of anorexia,” she said.
Nevertheless, the star firmly opposed the media’s tendency to exert pressure on young girls, emphasizing the detrimental effects of promoting unhealthy weight loss.
“It is becoming worrying how many super-thin girls we see walking around, and they are so obviously ill. It is kind of accepted and it is glamorized more than it should be,” she said.
