Regarded among the classic movies of the Hollywood industry and one of the top-grossing movies ever, Titanic has earned its prestige. The romantic drama was based on a real incident. The beautiful love story between Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s characters became iconic and still looked up to as the best on-screen pair over the decades. The movie was about the Titanic – a massive ship that sank after hitting an iceberg in 1912.
Kate Winslet played the female lead in the film and her flawless beauty as Rose was unmatched. However, maintaining the gorgeous looks throughout the filming came at a cost for the actress.
Kate Winslet dyed her hair for Titanic
The beautiful diva became a global star after the grand success of her movie Titanic. The film won a number of awards, and Winslet was nominated for Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
As we saw in the film, Winslet’s character had red locks, but in her real life, her hair was not that color. It was because the actress had dyed her natural blonde hair for the requirement of her role. However, reportedly, Rose was not supposed to have red hair and it was director James Cameron‘s idea.
Winslet shared in an interview with Elle,
“Rose was never described as having red hair, and I remember the first conversation with [director] Jim Cameron about her hair color. He asked, ‘How would you feel if we did something really bold with her hair?’ He wanted it to be red, but an intense, unusual red and I was very excited about that.”
Fans of the movie admired Rose’s hair in the film hence, it seems like the hard work paid off for Winslet and the crew.
Kate Winslet had to wait two years to get back her natural blonde hair after Titanic
Kate Winslet had never in her dreams thought about the complexity of coloring her hair for the role. She shared,
“I hadn’t counted on how hard it would be to go back to my natural hair color after filming. It took almost two years.”
Additionally, Titanic was a film based on a sinking ship, hence she spent a lot of time filming with water. It made it difficult for her to maintain the hairstyle as well. The Revolutionary Road actress shared,
“My hair isn’t naturally wavy, so it had to be curled every day and was impossible to maintain because there was water all around us. We were filming in a series of tanks, so the water was always in the air, and it would create a problem for everybody’s hair.”
After the success of Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Titanic, Winslet garnered appreciation for her work in films like Finding Neverland (2004), Revolutionary Road (2008), and The Reader (2008).
