Zendaya is at the top of Hollywood right now. From Euphoria to Spider-Man and more, the actress has taken the film and fashion industry by storm. She also has won two Emmys in the Outstanding Actress category and will appear in the sequel to the blockbuster Dune this year. But once upon a time, she was more than an actress.

During her Disney days, the Dune star used to be a singer as well. The actress sang her Disney show, K.C. Undercover’s theme, and even had her debut album called Replay at 17. However, it has been years since then and there has been no announcement from her regarding any music. But that’s intentional because the music industry left Zendaya shaken.

“I think the [music] industry takes a little bit of passion away from you. It sucks you dry a little bit. What I thought I wanted, it’s not what I want anymore, [especially] when I think about what I had to deal with in the music industry.”

But the Euphoria star didn’t want to discourage anyone from pursuing their musical passions. Instead, she gave a piece of advice about contracts in the music industry. Zendaya said:

“If anyone asks my number one advice, for [the entertainment] industry in general but mostly the music industry, it’s look over those contracts, every single word, and don’t sign anything that isn’t worth it to you. You are worth more than they will say that you are.”

While the Hollywood star’s music dreams are at a standstill right now, her acting career is moving at a breakneck pace. Puck’s Matthew Belloni revealed that the actress recently renegotiated her Euphoria contract to increase her remuneration per episode of season 3 to close to a million.

Zendaya began her acting career on the Disney channel. She appeared in shows like Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover as well as films like Frenemies and Zapped. Getting a Disney launch might seem ideal to many, but it comes with its own constraints. In a Glamour interview, the actress said “Having a Disney past sometimes makes it difficult for people to take you seriously.”

Over the years, the actress has definitely tried hard to break out of her Disney channel persona. Starring in Euphoria as Rue was perhaps the biggest step in this direction. But the star isn’t in any hurry to continue in the same direction. She is instead thinking about the long-term and thinking where about she wants her career to go next.

The Marvel star said, “I’m in the phase of learning and watching and trying to absorb as much as I can.” As for music, she is still holding out hope and wants to be a songwriter for others one day. But acting is her bread and butter right now. Her fans will certainly follow her budding career with interest.

Zendaya’s debut album is streaming on Spotify.
