This is not John Boyega’s first rodeo. The actor became well-known all over the world as a result of his role in Star Wars films. But things haven’t always been smooth sailing throughout his tenure with Disney.
John Boyega voiced his displeasure with the company’s treatment of him and other actors of color in the Star Wars property when his character Finn was demoted in future films following his big role in The Force Awakens. Boyega has accepted his past and can see the good effect the franchise has had on his development as an actor and a person.
Black Actors in Hollywood: The Uphill Battle
John Boyega’s experiences with the Star Wars saga were shaped by his position as a black actor in Hollywood. When Boyega first started playing Finn, he was thrilled to be a part of a series making history for its inclusiveness and diversity. Boyega saw a disturbing tendency as the franchise continued: Black characters were ignored in favor of white equivalents.

In an interview with GQ, John Boyega expressed his dissatisfaction with the further development of his character in the Star Wars sequels.
“You get yourself involved in projects and you’re not necessarily going to like everything. [But] what I would say to Disney is, do not bring out a Black character, market them to be much more important in the franchise than they are, and then have them pushed to the side. It’s not good. I’ll say it straight up.”
John Boyega has learned to accept his past despite his struggles with the Star Wars series. In a recent interview with The Times London, he discussed the franchise’s good influence on his professional and personal development.
“For me Star Wars has made the man, in a sense… The experiences, the fun times, good times, ugly times, bad times, it makes you who you are as you navigate through the industry, and that has definitely been interesting.”
John Boyega still sees problems with how the Star Wars series handles people of color, but he can see how much the experience has helped him professionally and personally. The highs and lows of his Star Wars career are not lost on him, but he has learned to move on.
Looking to the Future
John Boyega is grateful for the opportunities he was given throughout his time with Star Wars, despite the challenges he encountered there. He has accepted the ending of his character’s journey and now enjoys viewing other franchise efforts like The Mandalorian and Obi-Wan Kenobi.
After his hit Thriller/Drama movie Breaking was released last year, the actor will be seen in his upcoming movie They Cloned Tyrone, which will release later this year in July 2023. It will be fascinating to witness how John Boyega develops as an actor and a person as he takes on new roles and takes advantage of new possibilities.
While working on the Star Wars films certainly had its difficulties, it’s obvious that Boyega learned a lot along the road. We can’t wait to see what he does next because of his optimistic outlook and eagerness to improve himself and the business.
