“It looks better than anything Spielberg’s done”: Spring Breakers Director Claims Call of Duty Trailer Beats Every Steven Spielberg Movie in Bizarre Statement

Spring Breakers Director Claims Call of Duty Trailer Beats Every Steven Spielberg Movie in Bizarre Statement

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming out later this year and Activision revealed a gameplay trailer at Gamescom 2023 recently, that showcased the game in the best way possible. The game is already one of the most anticipated games of the year, along with Starfield, and Spider-Man 2, both of which are coming out before Modern Warfare 3 and a host of other major games. While the gameplay trailer looked like another classic Call of Duty game by Activision, the trailers for the game were praised a lot by the Spring Breakers director, Mr. Harmony Korine.

While he’s been quite vocal about how he foresees the advancements in films and gaming technology will, in some way, find a way to converge, his praise for the upcoming Activision game still caught everyone by surprise with his rather bizarre comparisons.

In a recent interview with GQ, Filmmaker Harmony Korine spoke about his upcoming venture Aggro Dr1ft, and mentioned how he felt the new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 trailer was something that’s visually more compelling than any of the work director Steven Spielberg has worked on. While the comparison sounded rather odd, he did go on to explain how his studio is constantly trying to “gamify movies”.

“You could look at the Call of Duty trailer now, and it looks better than anything that [Steven] Spielberg’s ever done.”

He explained further by adding how he envisions a mechanism where people will be able to interface with film footage and make their own remix versions. Korine also mentioned that his upcoming movie has a “game core” aesthetic, and how he sees future movies getting closer to being more like video games than traditional films of the past.

Spielberg is a renowned multiple Academy Awards winner who has always worked on traditional movie making while Korine has set himself apart from the industry by working on his own unique projects. He also mentioned how he is only willing to return to filmmaking the traditional way, for one project, if ever, after reading a script that interested him a lot.

Harmony mentioned how he sees the end of traditional movie-making coming soon, as he envisions the birth of something new. He mentioned how movies might just be taking more inspiration from live-action gaming with new methods and ideas forming the way movies are made in the future. Call of Duty franchise is known for cinematic storylines and immersive experiences that have captivated gamers for decades now. Starfield is another game that recently showcased a live-action trailer at Gamescom 2023, welcomed by hyped fans at the event and online.

As for movies themselves, Harmony did mention how he might just return to filmmaking for a project with Terrence Malick who has already written a script wanting him to direct. He did mention, however, that getting back to directing movies might not be as easy as it sounds for him, as he might change too many things he finds distracting. Apart from that, Harmony confirmed how he has absolutely no other plans to get back to directing movies the old ways.

The upcoming reboot from Activision showed a stealthy approach to what looked like a prison break of a character, who wasn’t revealed in the end. The entire footage of the mission, however, looked as crisp and brilliant as was expected from the game. The latest FPS offering looks to be on par for another smash hit in the franchise, as players are promised the game will have interesting options for them to choose from, while planning a mission.

David Swenson, the Campaign Creative Director at Sledgehammer Games, confirmed that the gamers will have options for their approach to Open Combat Missions, planning their armor and way for either a stealth approach or a loud approach with all the firepower required. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 goes live in the US on the 10th of November, later this year.
