By the time the 2000s arrived, Sandra Bullock was already a big name in the industry, thanks to 1994’s Speed, which starred her and Keanu Reeves at its forefront and is widely considered her best work. But following the dawn of the new century, the actress decided to shift from her roots and expand her boundaries by starring in a risky comedy alongside the likes of Michael Cane and William Shatner.
But the movie eventually opened up with a mixed response for its humor despite garnering a respectable $212 million from a budget of $45 million. And years later, Bullock reflected on the buzz that surrounded the movie and its influence on young girls.
Sandra Bullock felt right working on Miss Congeniality
2000’s Miss Congeniality has garnered immense appreciation from fans for becoming one of the few female-led comedy flicks at the time and showcasing Sandra Bullock‘s immense acting skills. However, the movie also surrounded itself with its fair share of criticisms, especially due to its raunchy humor and several sexist jokes, which haven’t aged well. The movie also became a major talking point among parents, due to its unintentional influence on young girls at the time and even the Speed star’s own daughter.
Reflecting on the matter, Bullock explained that even though she “felt right to make that film”, she did tackle the topic of its unintentional negative influence on young girls by stating,
“It’s my daughter’s favorite film, annoyingly so. The stuff that she repeats, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. I need to apologize to so many parents ’cause now I’m getting it back.’ But it’s physical comedy, and she’s a tomboy, and my daughter is that”.
Despite its few flaws, the movie did become one of Bullock’s best works at the time, and she even earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance and the film still holds up pretty well. But this wasn’t the case for the sequel, which even the actress regrets starring in it.
Sandra Bullock regrets working on Miss Congeniality 2
Sandra Bullock is no new to bad sequels, including Speed 2, which she regretted doing and the same was the case for the follow-up to 2000’s Miss Congeniality. Unlike the first movie, which doesn’t fail to leave fans giggling, the sequel doesn’t hold up too well, and even Bullock doesn’t look back to it fondly. Even though she loved working with director Regina Hall, she expressed her regrets about returning for the sequel and brushed off the possibility of starring in a threequel. She said,
“God no, no. No. [Miss Congeniality] 2 shouldn’t have been done, but I’m glad that it did because it was with Regina [Hall], who just, I freakin’ adore. That one should’ve remained a one-off.”
The actress has come a long way since starring in the raunchy comedy and has made a big name for herself. But Miss Congeniality will be remembered as one of her most memorable works.
Miss Congeniality is available to stream on Apple TV.
