Before the announcement of Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey Skywalker in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming Star Wars project, there was another version of the story that was scrapped by Lucasfilm. For a long while, Damon Lindelof was one of the frontrunners to lead a Star Wars film on the big screen after the failure of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. However, despite initially being hired for the job, he was recently shown the exit doors by Lucasfilm due to creative differences.
Following his departure from the franchise, it seems that the reason behind this was Lindelof’s grand vision for his story, which didn’t sit in line with Lucasfilm’s plans.
Lucasfilm wasn’t intrigued by Damon Lindelof’s vision for Star Wars
Following the recent reports from Industry Insider Jeff Sneider during a podcast with John Rocha, he revealed that Lindelof’s Star Wars story was reportedly set 60 years after the events of 2019’s Star Wars. According to Sneider, the story would have reportedly witnessed a much older version of Rey Skywalker with one of Lindelof’s choices being Helen Mirren. But following his eventual exit from the project, John Rocha tuned in with Sneider to share his distaste with Lucasfilm on the matter and expressed his viewpoint on the situation by stating,
“This is crazy to me, because like you hire Damon Lindelof based on his pitch, and if in this pitch you want to, want to change one of the most fundamental parts of the pitch, it just doesn’t make sense to me”
But despite his vision getting butchered by the studios, it seems that it hasn’t fazed Damon Lindelof’s love for the IP, and is still open to the idea of working on a Star Wars project in the future.
Damon Lindelof is still adamant about crafting a Star Wars project
Although he might not be among the three filmmakers who were recently handed the keys to crafting their Star Wars stories, Damon Lindelof is still open to making a movie for Lucasfilm. Following his extreme passion and love for the franchise, the screenwriter expressed that even though he was asked to leave the franchise for now, the filmmaker hasn’t given up hope. Lindelof explained that he is still adamant about making a Stars Wars movie in the future by stating,
“Will I get back in line outside the club and try to get back in again? Of course. [Star Wars] was the alpha and the omega. It’s the first movie I saw in a movie theater. I love all of the storytelling in that world. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again. Or again, again, try, as Yoda would say.”
Although Lindelof expressed that he will get back in line again and wait for the opportunity to craft his own Star Wars story, following the upcoming slate for the franchise, it might be a long wait for the screenwriter.
