With its release in 2010, Remedy Entertainment’s video game Alan Wake completely changed the face of the psychological thriller video game genre. While the game isn’t classified as horror, it managed to give players some sleepless nights. Now, Alan Wake‘s sequel, Alan Wake II is all set to push the boundaries.
Finnish video game writer, Sam Lake, who is the creative director at Remedy Entertainment, revealed that the sequel will be Remedy Entertainment’s longest video game. He also explained that there is an important reason why they have increased the playtime. Unlike the first game, which was an action-adventure game with horror themes, Alan Wake II is a survival horror game.
Sam Lake reveals that Alan Wake II will be Remedy Entertainment’s longest-video game
With the anticipation for Alan Wake II at an all-time high, Remedy Entertainment’s creative director, Sam Lake, revealed some exciting news during his recent appearance on Kinda Funny Games Daily,
“So Control was our longest game to date, and Alan Wake 2 is going to be longer than that – 20 hours plus.”
Remedy Entertainment is also working on a sequel to 2019’s Control, Control 2, which is being made for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. The studios have created some iconic games in the past like the Max Payne franchise, 2016’s Quantum Break, and 2022’s CrossfireX.
The playtime has been increased due to a major reason
The consumers are one of the main reasons why the creators increased the playtime. In order to satisfy the customers the playtime has been increased so basically, the longer a game is, the more worth it is to some buyers.
There will be two campaign modes in the game: one from the perspective of returning protagonist Alan Wake and a new character, Saga Anderson.
The story follows Wake, who has been trapped in an alternate dimension for 13 years, as he attempts to escape by writing a horror story involving an FBI agent named Saga Anderson. It took Remedy Entertainment roughly 13 years after the idea of a sequel was first pitched in 2010.
Alan Wake II is inspired by this franchise
Remedy Entertainment’s upcoming survival horror game has taken some major inspiration from the Resident Evil franchise. In an interview with Edge, game director Kyle Rowley revealed (via GamesRadar),
“Camera perspective and things like that, yes, there are good references from the recent Resident Evil games that we did look at. But not just because, oh, you know, it worked for them. It’s more like, how does that help us build the kind of experience we want? More claustrophobic; making the player feel more vulnerable; making the enemies feel more physical and dangerous.”
The first game was criticized for its fighting mechanics, so this time Lake has confirmed that they have spent a significant amount of time working on that bit. The game is scheduled to be released for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S on October 27, 2023.
