Did Robert Downey Jr Want To Cast Johnny Depp in Sherlock Holmes 3?
Robert Downey Jr is a man of many talents who pours his heart out to deliver a flawless performance on the silver screen. Downey Jr has been part of many record-smashing, award-winning, and iconic projects in American cinema. He has played varied roles throughout his career, but fans love his work across the Sherlock Holmes film series the most.
The actor played the title character beginning with the original 2009 flick of the same name and reprised his role for the second installment: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Since the release of its second sequel, there have been debates on the internet among his fans that they want to see him donning his character hat as an eccentric detective for another sequel.
Recently, his wife-film producer Susan Downey confirmed that Sherlock Holmes 3 is still his priority, and they will move the project when the time is right. She said,
“Well, here’s what I can tell you. And Amanda can attest to this. Prior to this, we had lunch together with Robert, the three of us. And it was a very specific topic of conversation. So yes, it is in the hopper. We’re going to do it when it’s right, with the right people, but it is a priority for the company and a priority for Robert.”
However, there have been rumors swirling, since Amber Heard lost the controversial defamation trial from her former husband Johnny Depp, that the Avengers: Endgame star wanted to cast Depp in the forthcoming Sherlock Holmes 3. This epic Hollywood actor duo has shared the silver screen in a series of fascinating films, though it is unclear whether he would make his appearance in the flick given that the project is still on halt.
Robert Downey Jr Talks About Portraying Sherlock Holmes
In an interview, Robert Downey Jr shared his experience playing the fan-favorite character Sherlock Holmes in the mystery action film series. The actor has charmed the audience since donning his character hat for the original flick. He told Collider,
“Well, you just keep Doyle in mind. I respect the guy more and more. Oftentimes what’s required, particularly if you’re in any central position, is that you just have to let go of the things that are darling to you. You have to take the focus off yourself and put it on the shape of the scene and the intention of what everyone else needs. You have to give people something to actually write music to so that you’re not just running your mouth all the time. It was a democracy in the truest, most frustrating, and most rewarding sense of the word.”
Guy Ritchie-directed Sherlock Holmes received an overwhelming response from the audience and earned critical acclaim from the critics. Robert Downey Jr won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor, and the movie earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Art Direction. The forthcoming third sequel is currently under wraps.
Sherlock Holmes is available for streaming on Netflix.
