Tom Holland’s latest Apple TV+ thriller series The Crowded Room was heavily panned by critics, putting a downer on the actor’s self-esteem. He rose to fame for his portrayal of Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it seems that Holland isn’t getting any success in projects outside the realm of the superhero world.
The criticism brought so much depression on the actor’s part that he needed to take a year off from acting. He said that filming The Crowded Room affected him to the bones due to the intensity of the shoot. Regardless, Holland isn’t letting bad reviews get the best of him.
Tom Holland Seeks Comfort In His Favorite Soccer Team Following Negative Reviews Of The Crowded Room
In an interview with Unilad, Marvel star Tom Holland likened working in The Crowded Room to being an avid supporter of England’s Tottenham Hotspur, his favorite soccer team. The club has never won the Premiere League, but they remain relentless, and this taught Holland the meaning of resilience:
“I think being a Tottenham fan is somewhat like being in ‘The Crowded Room.’ It has taught me resilience. Tottenham has never won anything and supporting them is incredibly difficult. It’s no secret my show has been so horribly reviewed, but I’m here today to promote the show and I’m still here. I’m very resilient. It’s a good quality.”
The Crowded Room aired earlier this month and has been bombarded with harsh criticism. It currently holds an average critics score of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes. The series follows Holland’s character, Danny Sullivan, who was arrested in 1979 due to a shooting at Rockefeller Center in New York City.
Holland added the importance of focusing on the message of the show rather than letting the bad reviews take away the experience:
“I think that the message of the show, which can speak to so many different issues is that asking for help should be something that we as a society celebrate. It’s an act of bravery. Standing up and asking for help is not something you should be ashamed of, and I hope that this show can represent that in a truthful and authentic, and most importantly, sensitive way.”
Despite the brutal critics’ rating, Holland was happy to know that fans enjoyed the series and gave a generous 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tom Holland Suffered Mental Health Issues While Filming The Crowded Room
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Holland got candid and revealed that the character he portrayed in The Crowded Room gave him so much anxiety:
“I remember having a bit of a meltdown at home and thinking, like, ‘I’m going to shave my head. I need to shave my head because I need to get rid of this character.’ And, obviously, we were mid-shooting, so I decided not to… It was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.”
The making of the show and the bad reviews gravely disrupted Holland’s mental health, but the actor finally confirmed that he has been sober for a year and four months now.
The Crowded Room is streaming on Apple TV+.
