Being as talented as Emily Blunt is, it is natural for her to improvise and act on her impulses while performing. Known for being an acting genius, it is a no-brainer that she is a natural actor, bringing life and authenticity to every role she takes.
The talented actress has starred in multiple films with various famous actors, including Tom Cruise. In their film, Edge of Tomorrow, there takes place an unusual kiss which was a brilliant improv by the A Quite Place star, surprising everyone on the set.
Emily Blunt Improvised Kiss With Tom Cruise
Films sets are often unusual places, full of surprises and shocking elements. A place where actors can truly unleash their creative selves, the film set provides them to bring their ideas to life. And so it was on the set of Edge of Tomorrow. The film focuses on Tom Cruise’s character who gets stuck in a time loop because of an alien invasion. The only person who believes is Emily Blunt‘s character, a very deadly yet reputed sergeant.
During the shoot, the director Christopher McQuarrie revealed it was hard to include a romantic moment between the two characters.
“The kiss at the end of the movie, we struggled with how to create any sort of…not romance, but their emotional connection between these characters. It was really difficult… As we were shooting that scene at the very end of the movie, we gave up on the kiss. We weren’t even trying to find a place for it anymore.”
The Oppenheimer star, however, had her ideas and brilliantly improvised their kissing scene.
“And right as Emily was saying goodbye to Tom, she just kissed him goodbye in the moment. And it was not in the script. It was not even discussed on the day. Afterwards, she said, ‘It just felt right. It felt right and I did it.’”
And much to everyone’s surprise, her improvisation fit perfectly within the storyline.
It Was Hard To Portray Emily Blunt And Tom Cruise’s Relationship
Edge of Tomorrow is primarily focused on how Tom Cruise‘s character goes on to destroy the alien force that has infiltrated the planet. Due to the challenging storyline and being primarily an action-thriller film, it was difficult to portray any emotional connection between Blunt and Cruise’s characters. Christopher McQuarrie once stated in an interview,
“It’s difficult to express in a way that isn’t physical, short of something that’s really sappy. And so as much as we tried to write some sort of a romantic moment between them, it always felt false. It always felt like they weren’t focused on what was really important, which was she wanted to kill the Omega and he just wanted to get out of this. He just wanted it all to end.”
And thus, Emily Blunt’s improvisation helped bring a more emotional depth into the film, proving how brilliant an actor she is.
Edge of Tomorrow can be watched on Amazon Prime.
