Tom Felton Wanted To Be Popular Among Girls

To Tom Felton, the Harry Potter role was akin to any other job. Initially, they considered him for both Harry Potter and his best friend Ron Weasley, going through the curious process of dyeing his hair black and then ginger. Felton found this experience a bit puzzling. Eventually, he landed the role of Draco Malfoy.

Contrary to the image of an overnight child-star spiraling out of control, Tom Felton‘s experience during the early films was remarkably stable. His schedules were structured in a manner that allowed him to attend school with alternating weeks on and off, unlike his co-stars Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, and Daniel Radcliffe, who were fully committed to the project for a decade. This continuity in his life allowed him to maintain a sense of normalcy. While he occasionally faced playful teasing from friends, the attention from his schoolmates was relatively insignificant.

The primary source of his frustration stemmed from the times he had to miss out on Halloween parties and school excursions due to his commitments on set. Felton clarifies that some people may have difficulty grasping the fact that he wasn’t the “cool kid” as portrayed in the movies.

“Some people really struggle with the idea that I wasn’t this special, popular kid,” Felton said, “but I was walking around with dyed hair and played an evil wizard. It wasn’t cool. It did me no favours with the girls.”

Walking around with dyed hair and portraying an antagonist like an evil wizard didn’t earn him any extra points with the girls or make him particularly popular.
