Tom Cruise’s ex-wife, Nicole Kidman may have been hush-hush about her personal life, but the time she opened up about her controlling ex-husband, the Big Little Lies star said it all in a few words. The actress, who found her support system in Keith Urban, got married to Cruise at just 22. The actress, who shares two adopted children with Cruise, once revealed why she chose a man who was nothing but controlling.
Nicole Kidman Chose To Walk Down The Aisle For “Protection, Not Power”
Tom Cruise may be the most-desiring actor in Hollywood, but his urge to micromanage distanced several interestest ladies. Nicole Kidman was an exception, of course until the ex-couple’s divorce. The actress (then 22), who got married to Tom Cruise in 1990, made a rare statement about the reason behind her marriage in a personal essay for New York Magazine in 2018.
Nicole Kidman wrote in her essay:
“Being married to Tom Cruise at 22 is something I’m always reluctant to talk about, because I’m married now to the man who is my great love [Keith Urban], and it almost feels disrespectful.
That said, I got married very young, but it definitely wasn’t power for me ― it was protection. I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed.”
Even though she didn’t name people, The Undoing star admitted that she suffered sexual harassment during her early career. Kudos to Cruise for being the guardian angel, but again, it’s Scientology that he loves more. It’s shocking that both her children, Isabella and Connor, decided to embrace Scientology. On the other hand, Kidman’s refusal to join the cult ended up in their divorce.

Nicole Kidman has kept her children away from the spotlight, but she did make some heartbreaking confessions about how her adopted children chose to live with Tom Cruise and practice Scientology after the couple’s brutal divorce in 2001. Kidman, however, chose divorce over Tom Cruise’s cult.
Later came Cruise’s divorce from Katie Holmes, again for the same reason. The irony here is that Cruise’s only biological daughter, Suri Cruise continues to condemn her father for his Scientology belief, something that kept him distant from his daughter. Katie Holmes, on the other hand, left Scientology after her divorce from Cruise.
The moral of the story is that the Church of Scientology has often come under fire for many failed marital relationships. Cruise may have everything he desires, except for an Oscar and a stable family. As for Kidman, the lady somehow managed to find both, love and protection in her husband, Keith Urban.
