The launching pad of the Marvel franchise began with a billionaire who defied all the odds and rose against the tide to become the hero he was destined to be. Iron Man was a reclamation of that destiny and it wasn’t just Tony Stark whose future would forever be changed after stepping out of the dark cave.
Robert Downey Jr. redefined the Marvel franchise and has rightfully been hailed as the godfather of the cinematic universe. But through it all, his co-star and on-screen partner, Gwyneth Paltrow had a very limited idea of what the suit that made an entire franchise take a bow actually symbolized.
Gwyneth Paltrow Comments on the Purpose of Iron Man Suit
Gwyneth Paltrow aka Pepper Potts has remained a steadfast force of strength and will in Iron Man’s corner ever since the start of the franchise. Through it all, she has fought, and through it all, she has lived. And along the way, the actor noticed a thing or two about the inner working and mechanisms of the well-oiled MCU juggernaut. Although when asked about it, she might as well be the one person who is more clueless than any other member on set.
In a red carpet interview, Paltrow was asked about what the Iron Man suit can do and she simply replied: “The Iron Man suit can fly, it can shoot some stuff out of it, and it can make [Robert Downey Jr.] look very sexy.” If not for the presence of RDJ himself there to make light of the situation with a humorous jab at the right moment, the reply might have panned out as a worthy subject for the internet trolls.
Gwyneth Paltrow is Clueless About the Marvel Universe
Since her advent in the franchise, Gwyneth Paltrow has done a surprisingly good job of impressing the audience with her temperamental take on the character of Pepper Potts. But when it comes to the MCU at large, Paltrow is not the person you can go to for answers. Starting from the first film itself, the actress has never been a heavily invested partisan of the chain of events that compose the Marvel chronology.
Pepper Potts’s involvement in the cinematic canon has been selective at best, appearing only in arcs that catalyze Iron Man’s own. Any major character development that was provided to Paltrow’s part was through Iron Man 3 and the Avengers: Endgame scene where the female heroes unite in a show of strength and empowerment. No wonder when asked about a film or the extent of her involvement in it, the Emma actress has hardly anything useful to add to the conversation.
