It is a common misconception that two prominent celebrities from the same generation can’t be close friends. Although this statement is not always true, it most likely was in the case of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt.
For the past few decades, these two actors have been among the most popular figures in Hollywood. Pitt and Cruise both entered the entertainment industry around the same time, and their careers took a somewhat similar path. However, they reportedly did not get along, when they both appeared in the 1994 film, Interview with the Vampire.
The Fight Club actor last appeared in Babylon (2022), which got five nominations for the 80th Golden Globe Awards. Meanwhile, Cruise recently starred in the critically acclaimed and well-received, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
The Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood actor once said that there is a rivalry between the two, which is understandable given that they both want to be the top actors in Hollywood.
Later, Pitt went so far as to call one of Cruise’s films “ridiculous”.
Brad Pitt on His Rivalry with Tom Cruise
Back in the days of Interview With the Vampire, Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise had a cordial but occasionally contentious relationship. The former actor was allegedly responsible for inciting a fight between Cruise and himself in another incident.
Pitt, however, would later claim that his remarks had been misinterpreted.
Their interactions, according to the Mr. and Mrs. Smith actor, who is renowned for his endearing charisma and laid-back demeanor, was like a tug-of-war between the two actors. As a result, there was less chance of developing a close relationship.
During his previous interviews for their 1994 gothic horror movie, Pitt was incredibly open about his experiences. The Bullet Train actor did not particularly enjoy the process of filming the adaptation of the well-known book by Anne Rice.
Pitt further believed that despite their continued professionalism, a barrier existed between him and the Top Gun actor that prevented them from ever establishing a close relationship:
“I felt that there was this underlying competition that prevented us from having genuine conversation. It wasn’t hostile in any way, but it was there and it bothered me to some extent.”
However, even though Pitt expressed his annoyance with Cruise’s competitive nature, he praised the Mission: Impossible actor for his commitment and unwavering work ethic.
“However, I have to acknowledge that he receives a lot of criticism for being successful. But he is a talented actor and has progressed in the film industry. You have to respect that.”
Brad Pitt Reportedly Called Tom Cruise’s Valkyrie ‘Ridiculous’
It was expected that the rivalry between Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt would subside with time. However, remarks that the 59-year-old actor allegedly made about Cruise’s Valkyrie in 2009 gave their rivalry a loud comeback.
The father of six allegedly spoke negatively about Valkyrie in an interview with the German magazine Stern (via Digital Spy). He remarked:
“It [Valkyrie] was a ridiculous movie. The Second World War could still deliver more stories and films, but I believe that Quentin put a cover on that pot.”
Well, Cruise and Pitt have each amassed hundreds of millions of dollars over the course of their illustrious and lengthy careers. The former’s most recent film, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, has received high marks from both critics and viewers. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two, the direct sequel, will debut on June 28, 2024.
Meanwhile, Pitt’s upcoming film, Landscape with Invisible Hand, a science fiction comedy-drama, will hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
