George Clooney and Michelle Pfeiffer were two legendary characters in the entertainment industry who had captivated fans for years. When a highly anticipated film failed to make a mark at the box office, fingers were often pointed, and blame was assigned. Such was the case for the 62-year-old and his co-star, who found themselves at the center of a movie box office disaster.
Both actors were quick to point the finger at the film’s promotion, claiming that it had been horribly executed and had ultimately led to the film’s disappointing performance.
George Clooney And Co-star Blamed Awful Promotion For One Fine Day Box Office Disaster
In a previous conversation with former co-star Michelle Pfeiffer for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, George Clooney recounted a strange incident from their time working together on the 1996 film One Fine Day.
Clooney co-star Michelle Pfeiffer recalled that the actor showed up to the set smelling like a brewery, which the Oscar winner attributed to a night of heavy drinking with his friend Rande Gerber while he was in town.
Despite having the day off, Clooney confessed to being pretty hammered when he arrived on set the next morning. He explained,
“We stayed up and had a few vodkas or something. Then I came home at 1 in the morning, and I’m like, Oh s—. I was pretty hammered. I woke up at 5 in the morning. I was like, I feel OK. Then I looked in the mirror, and I was like, Oh, I’m still drunk.”
The discussion then shifted to the disappointing box-office performance of One Fine Day. Pfeiffer, who not only starred in the film but also served as an executive producer, revealed that the studio had moved up the release date from February to Christmas, leaving them with little time for proper promotion.
She also said that the movie had tested well, but the studio’s “got a little cocky” and overconfidence backfired, resulting in a lack of notable press.
The artist acknowledged the film’s underperformance, noting that “It bombed.” He also mentioned how perceptions of the movie have changed over time, with his wife and her friends expressing disbelief that it wasn’t a big hit.
All About One Fine Day
The film released in 1996 and directed by Michael Hoffman is an adorable romantic comedy that follows the lives of Jack Taylor (George Clooney), a single father and architect, and Melanie Parker (Michelle Pfeiffer), a busy journalist and working mother.
The story unfolds on a chaotic day when both Jack and Melanie are unexpectedly tasked with balancing their demanding careers and caring for their children due to a school mix-up.
As their paths intertwine throughout the day, the duo encounters unexpected situations and shares moments of humor. Amidst the chaos, a connection forms between them, leading them to view each other in a new and meaningful way.
The film explores themes of love, family, and the challenges that arise when trying to strike a balance between personal and professional lives.
Despite the film’s charm and the talent of its lead actors, One Fine Day did not perform well at the box office, earning only $46 million worldwide. The movie’s underwhelming commercial success was unexpected given its appealing storyline and star power.
