It Almost Happened! Tom Cruise Nearly Made History With Dwayne Johnson Before He Lost Interest in His Netflix Movie

2021’s Red Notice made history for Netflix upon its release, pulling in a record viewing time of 148 million hours on its opening day, thanks to its star-studded cast. But apart from Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, it appears Tom Cruise was also amidst the discussion of making an appearance in the action comedy, which didn’t end up happening.

Although the film wasn’t held high among critics, the star power of the three Hollywood giants was enough to pull in huge numbers. But unlike Reynolds, Johnson, and Gadot, the script for the film didn’t win over Cruise.

Tom Cruise was reportedly set to make an appearance in Red Notice

Before Red Notice made its way to the big screen, reports claimed Netflix was trying to negotiate a contract with Mission: Impossible actor Tom Cruise to star in the Dwayne Johnson-led film. But unlike the rest of the cast, he was reportedly set to make a cameo in the film, which would have set up his character for the sequel, as Netflix is set to craft a franchise around the Johnson-led film. However, considering Cruise is extremely picky about the role he chooses to do, the story for the movie didn’t succeed in grabbing the actor’s attention.

Another factor that might have played a part in Cruise’s exit from Red Notice could be the budget. Considering the Top Gun star is one of the biggest movie stars of this era, and Netflix already hired three prominent names for a paycheck of $20M each, it might’ve also led to Cruise parting ways with Netflix.

Gal Gadot gives an update regarding Red Notice 2‘s current state

Although the reported plans of a sequel to Red Notice with Tom Cruise may never come to fruition, the sequel is happening nonetheless and finally, Gal Gadot has some updates regarding the film. Even though Netflix has kept things under secrecy regarding Red Notice 2, Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot didn’t back away from expressing her excitement for it. Despite not revealing much about the current state of the project, the actress did reveal that she has read the script and everyone involved in it is extremely excited. She said,

“We’re all talking about it. I don’t know if I can say anything! I already read the second script and it’s… whoo! We’re all very excited about it.”

Apart from Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves’ name was also floating around Netflix’s Red Notice for a while too. Although that didn’t end up happening, at least fans are assured the sequel to the highly successful Red Notice is moving forward without any obstacles.

Red Notice is available to stream on Netflix.
