There is a scene in Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) that involves actor Tom Cruise hanging outside and running across the wing of a moving Airbus A400M aircraft at 8,000 feet in the air. The scene was shot over the course of a week in the United Arab Emirates. It was revealed that Cruise performed the entire stunt himself and performed 8 takes just to be sure. Cruise’s safety was the biggest concern as the stunt was quite risky. Tom Cruise was reportedly also the best driver on the set and that’s why the creators didn’t hire a professional driver. It was revealed that the actor got injured six times while filming the entire movie.
A special lens was created for Tom Cruise
The crew faced several difficulties while filming the scene, the main problems were bird strikes and wind resistance. In order to capture Cruise’s expressions, a wind-resistant custom frame was built for the camera and mounted onto the left wing of the plane.
Cruise also had trouble keeping his eyes open in the presence of fast wind and runway particles. In order to tackle this problem, a special lens was designed by his eye specialist that covered his entire eyeball. Director Christopher McQuarrie was worried that the actor might panic suddenly, but Tom Cruise managed to stay cool.

Even in the past, he has performed all his stunts without a stunt double. There is a scene in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) in which Tom Cruise’s character, Ethan Hunt, climbs the tallest building in the world, Burj Khalifa. Cruise performed the entire stunt without a stunt double.
