Henry Cavill as Superman in the DCEU had a long run but it’s coming to an end as new DC boss James Gunn is looking for a fresh face for his upcoming movie on the Man of Steel. But his tenure as the strongest man in the world has surely enhanced the charm of the character.
Filmmaker Zack Snyder introduced Cavill as Superman in his 2013 movie Man of Steel and ever since he has appeared in several DC movies, sometimes in iconic cameos. However, the fan-favorite modern-day Superman actor is retiring from the role and sadly, it has been confirmed.
Henry Cavill’s Departure From Superman
Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the DC’s strong character has surely made a mark in the progression of the modern DC landscape. However, following the DC takeover by James Gunn and Peter Safran the creative landscape of the studio has changed. Supposedly, hopping for a new dawn of the studio, the duo has axed even primary talents playing the major characters.
Earlier, Cavill declared on Instagram that he is coming back as Superman saying, “I wanted to make it official,” but nearly two months later another update from the actor popped up on the platform. “I will, after all, not be returning as Superman,” Cavill wrote.
“After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.”
There is certainly no doubt that Cavill’s association with Superman has made the modern version of the character very likable. Cavill is also fond of the character as he revealed in an interview with Collider that he would “love to have the opportunity to play the Superman that we all know and love from the comics, as a continuation of his development and we see the hero.”
“That would be really, really exciting for me because there is an opportunity to tell a lot of interesting story there,” he added.
But his departure from the role is confirmed.
Does Henry Cavill Have a Cameo in The Flash?
Alert: spoilers ahead.
Even though Cavill’s departure from DCEU is confirmed, the studio has left the fans on a cliffhanger. Earlier, Cavill’s Superman appeared in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. Although Johnson’s charm didn’t work in the film, it surely indicated the possible return of Cavill’s character. Taking to Instagram, Gunn revealed about the cameo saying that everything with “Black Adam happened before I was around.”
Also, as per reports, Cavill shot a cameo in Ezra Miller’s first standalone, The Flash but the studio cut out the cameo along with Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman. Perhaps, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3 is also not happening.
Back to Cavill, now fans are wondering what’s actually happened to Cavill’s cameo as Superman in the Miller movie. As per reports, Superman was featured in the film. In a scene in the beginning, Superman is shown from behind flying around on a TV news report. However, he is too busy to help Batman.
In a later scene, Barry Allen aka the Flash is traveling back in time to alter the past and his sad memories, but it all goes wrong when he is met with catastrophic consequences of time travel. But in the journey, several characters popped up, including Cavill’s Superman. In the close-up shot, Cavill was topless as he was resurrected following the events of Justice League.
However, further appearances of Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU are very uncertain. Maybe in the distant future, Gunn could bring Cavill in some multiverse crossover but so far, this is the end of Snyderverse and Cavill as Superman.
The Flash is scheduled to hit theaters on 16 June 2023.
