“Interesting, nuanced, complex characters”: Ben Affleck Wanted A ‘Formidable’ Villain Like Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke For His Batman Movie

Ben Affleck Wanted A ‘Formidable’ Villain Like Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke For His Batman Movie

Ben Affleck is one of the few actors in Hollywood who started from scratch and now enjoys a successful career in the entertainment industry. And throughout his tremendous career, the 50-year-old managed to score important roles in several super hit movies and franchises, especially known for his Batman portrayal in DC’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (2017).

However, his version of Batman wasn’t received too well in the beginning, and the Good Will Hunting star had to bid an unceremonious farewell to his character. And while he never got around to having a solo Batman movie of his own, Affleck did let out his desire for the characters he wanted to include had the movie been produced, the list of which also included Joe Manganiello’s Deathstroke.

Although never produced, the Batfleck movie would have included a lot of things that fans had been desiring for a long time now. This includes the return of Joe Manganiello‘s Deathstroke, but only in a better and more detailed version than before, as revealed by the Batman star himself.

At a recent SnyderCon fan meet, Ben Affleck talked details about the characters he wanted to include in the movie.

“There were a number of them that I was kind of exploring. And, the plans were to make interesting, nuanced, complex characters, in particular to the character you mentioned [Deathstroke]. I kind of feel like either you do – I’m just going to get into my own preference here – but either you do a kind of massive one villain that is so formidable you just can’t imagine how your protagonist is going to be able to overcome it. Or you have to really sort of populate kind of, you know, Injustice – these big group villains – where you have to get all these different characters. So I was at the time really trying to hone in and focus on that character and get into depth and detail about it to make him seem as impressive as I felt there was the opportunity to do. That’s the only detail I have for you.”

But seeing how the movie was inevitably one of those projects that ‘got away’, it seems that fans’ along with Affleck’s dreams of having their favorite formidable villain in a better vision in a DCEU movie would just remain a dream after all.

When news about Ben Affleck taking up the character of Bruce Wayne AKA Batman surfaced, fans weren’t all too delighted about it. Watching their favorite actor to ever portray the Dark Knight (Christian Bale) leave the franchise along with the role had already left fans heartbroken, so the Good Will Hunting star’s incoming in DCEU wasn’t widely welcomed.

In fact, many fans are said to have booed the actor for even accepting the offer of playing the Caped Crusader, and even after his first movie, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice was released back in 2017, many of them were still not convinced.

This, however, somehow changed over the course of time and now that Affleck had bidden farewell to the character, fans want him to reprise his role once again, eager to see him in his cape wherever possible. But now the chances of him appearing seem even much lesser, with only a possible fleeting cameo to look forward to in the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).
