Although their characters were against each other, Leslie Grace and Brendan Fraser seem to have a great relationship as co-stars. The American singer and actor was the lead in the now-canceled DC film, Batgirl. While Fraser has shared his opinion, saying that Batgirl’s cancellation is “tragic,” Grace has not been very vocal about it. And during her recent interview with Variety, the In the Heights star opened up about the film’s cancellation, which could have been her DC debut as Batgirl. She also shared how her co-star helped her move on from the film’s cancellation.
Batgirl was scheduled to be released in 2022. However, Warner Bros. Discovery claimed that it did not have the potential for a theatrical release and canceled the film. The film has become one of the most expensive canceled cinematic projects ever.
Brendan Fraser’s Gift Helped Leslie Grace Overcome Batgirl’s Cancellation
During her recent interview with Variety, Leslie Grace opened up about how she was able to move on from Batgirl’s cancellation. She shared that after finishing the production in Scotland, she received a gift from her co-star, Brendan Fraser. The Mummy star gifted Grace a charm necklace that included a little bell and a pair of dice. He also shared some sweet words with the gift.
“The card said a lot of really sweet things, but he basically said, ‘I give you this necklace because in this business you gotta have a little luck. So ring your bell and never stop,'”
Leslie shared that the words were meaningful after she found out that Warner Bros. canceled Batgirl. She starred alongside Brendan Fraser in the canceled film, who portrayed the villain, Firefly. Grace has earlier shared that she and The Whale star filmed several fight sequences, and she was excited about the film’s release.
Warner Bros. Studios had been planning to introduce the DC Comics character for years. The studio had initially planned to introduce Batgirl with the 2020 film, Birds of Prey. However, the plans were scrapped, and the studio considered that the character had the potential for a standalone film and started working on a solo project.
It was scheduled for a 2022 release on HBO Max. However, after WB’s merger with Discovery, the studio decided to focus only on theatrical releases. As Batgirl was developed with the purpose of release on the studio’s streaming platform, Warner Bros. announced the film’s cancellation. Leslie Grace also shared that she had no prior knowledge about the film’s cancelation.
Leslie Grace Was Unaware About Batgirl’s Cancellation
During her recent interview, Leslie Grace also shared that she had no prior knowledge about the cancellation of the film. The actress shared that she found out about the cancellation after New York Post reported the news.
She said, “I found out like the rest of you, and then my phone just started blowing up.” Just like her, Brendan Frase also found out about the cancellation after it was reported by news outlets.“I thought I was getting punked, but it checked out,” Fraser shared.
Grace also reflected on Peter Safran calling the film “unreleasable.” She said that as an actor, she had “no control” over these decisions. However, she did point out that the studio was not specific about what they felt about the film and “how it would’ve hurt DC creatively.” She also shared that the directors were already planning a sequel for the film, as its story had “long-term potential.”
Leslie Grace said that she has not heard from the new co-CEOs of the studio. But she wishes them good luck as they work on creating a new DCU with new projects.
