Following the exit of Trevor Noah from The Daily Show, John Leguizamo got his first shot at hosting the Late-Night show and the Ice Age actor came in guns blazing. The Comedian didn’t hold back during his first stint as the host of the iconic show, as he went on to call out Hollywood for the lack of Latino representation in the industry.
However, his jokes weren’t just exclusive to Hollywood’s shady practices, as the actor also went on to touch on the recent drama surrounding the Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow, involving her current Ski crash trial.
John Leguizamo calls out Hollywood for under-representing Latino talent
During his first stint as The Daily Show‘s host, John Leguizamo blasted Hollywood for the underrepresentation of Latino actors in the industry. The actor joked about the practice of white actors being selected for Latino roles while undermining most Latino actors. Leguizamo also joked about him being rejected on numerous occasions because he was too Latino to play a Latino character. He said,
“I can’t tell you how many times in my career I’ve been told at auditions that I sound too Latino, not Latino enough, that Latinos don’t want to watch other Latinos, all sorts of madness,”
But apart from his rant against Latino underrepresentation in Hollywood, Leguizamo didn’t miss the opportunity to joke about the Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow about her recent Ski Crash trial.
Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t immune from John Leguizamo’s jokes
Following his rant against the practice of white actors being cast in Latino roles, including James Franco’s role in Alina of Cuba, the actor joked about taking their roles as a result. Leguizamo expressed the hilarious idea of playing the role of Gwyneth Paltrow in a TV show based on her Ski accident trial.
The comedian referred to Paltrow’s recent Ski accident trial, where she was sued by a retired optometrist, Terry Sanderson, as he claimed that it was her fault for crashing into him back in 2016. John Leguizamo said,
“Well guess what? If white people can take our roles, Imma take theirs. When they do the TV series based on Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski accident trial, Imma be Gwyneth Paltrow,”
Although the drama surrounding Gwyneth Paltrow is yet to be resolved, however, Leguizamo might not be in full wrong following his rant against Hollywood for the underrepresentation of Latino talent. As reports suggested that between 2007-2019, only 3.5% of lead or co-leads of the top 1300 highest-grossing films had Hispanic or Latino actors.
