The film is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn, and it features Ryan Gosling in the lead role. Previously, during an interview, Gosling revealed how the idea of making this film struck Refn.
Refn has made iconic films throughout his filmmaking career, yet there is one thing that the supertalented director lacks. Refn, who made a hit film like Drive, doesn’t know how to drive. The director failed his driving exam eight times; however, he certainly excels when it comes to taking the steering wheel of the film in his hand.
Coming back to the topic, since Refn couldn’t drive himself, he asked Gosling to drive him back to the hotel after their meeting. Gosling said,
“I’m stuck with him for another hour driving out to Santa Monica, and he won’t talk to me so I turn on the radio to quiet the silence and REO Speedwagon’s ‘Can’t Fight This Feeling’ comes on.”
Since Refn was high on his meds, he got into the vibe, increased the volume of the music, and started to sing along. After a while, the director started to cry at the thought of leaving his family behind in Copenhagen just after having a second child.
Moreover, he was overwhelmed by the thought that he was pursuing a movie that Harrison Ford wasn’t interested in. Recounting all the incidents together, Refn had a moment of realization. He turned to Gosling and said,
“We’re going to make a movie about a man who drives around in a car, listening to pop music, because that is his emotional release!”
The moment Gosling heard his idea, he got convinced and agreed to be a part of it.
