Marvel is no stranger to hate, especially with its phase 4 turning many of its fans against the studio too. Many celebrities have also chimed in on the criticism including Oscar-winning directors Martin Scorsese and Alejandro González Iñárritu. And now actress Jennifer Aniston has joined the list.
Generally, Marvel has been criticized for following a formulaic structure in its movies and shows, with Ant-man being the most common example. Martin Scorsese too called Marvel products theme park rides and not traditional cinema.
Jennifer Aniston’s take on the big cinema
Most popular for her role on Friends as Rachel Green and We’re the Millers, Jennifer Aniston has finally made her return to TV with the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show. In an interview with Variety, the actor chimed into the Marvel debate:
“You’re seeing what’s available out there and it’s just diminishing and diminishing in terms of, it’s big Marvel movies… Or things that I’m not just asked to do or really that interested in living in a green screen.”
The criticism of visual effects overpowering the selling point of the film is nothing new, just take a look at Disney’s Lion King remake or Avatar. Most films use green screen backgrounds to add stuff later, which could make it difficult for many actors to get into character.
Also, the argument that Marvel movies are taking a big chunk of cinema is nothing new, as it was already highlighted by Martin Scorsese. Most blockbuster hits are superhero films, sequels, or remakes, which doesn’t leave much room for original productions to flourish.
What’s the solution?
Even though the criticism of Marvel films has been abundant, not many solutions have been suggested. Previously, Mark Ruffalo had suggested subsidizing “another kind of cinema” through a national endowment of the arts, but this option might be farfetched.
On the other hand, Jennifer Aniston noted:
“I think we should have a resurgence. Let’s get the ‘Terms of Endearment’ back out there. You know, ‘Heaven Can Wait,’ ‘Young Frankenstein,’ ‘Blazing Saddles,’ ‘Goodbye Girl.'”

By recommending a bunch of comedy adjacent productions, the Friends actor is directly noting the alternative to Marvel films, which are also accused of being comedy-adjacent.

Jennifer Aniston further noted how she’d love “to have the era of Meg Ryan come back,” as she was a staple in romantic comedies, including the very popular, You’ve got Mail. She noted the comfort such movies would bring in movie theatres if they hopefully returned.
