Timothée Chalamet is one of the rising stars of Hollywood. Thanks to his work in Dune, Little Women, Call Me By Your Name, and more, he is steadily rising in the ranks of actors. But apart from being a great artist, he has garnered a lot of attention for being a considerate and sympathetic man when he donated his entire salary from the one Woody Allen film he did, A Rainy Day in New York.
When the Me Too movement was at its height in 2018, Woody Allen was accused of s*xual assault by his adoptive daughter Dylan Farrow. He has denied all the allegations. But that’s not all. For a long time, people weren’t exactly pleased about Allen marrying Soon-Yi Previn, the other adopted daughter of his ex-partner Mia Farrow. While celebrities like Scarlett Johansson stood by him during this time, others like Chalamet didn’t.
Timothée Chalamet Donated His Woody Allen Money
Back in 2018, Timothée Chalamet was often asked about his decision to work with Woody Allen in light of the accusations brought forth by Dylan Farrow. In an Instagram post, he addressed all such questions and revealed that he has donated his salary from the movie. His post stated:
“I have been asked in a few recent interviews about my decision to work on a film with Woody Allen last summer… I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: Time’s Up, the LGBT Centre in New York, and RAINN.”
He further stated that “I am profoundly sorry. It’s a small gesture and not one intended as close to compensation. I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all the people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
Apart from Timothée Chalamet, Hollywood professionals like Rebecca Hall, Greta Gerwig, and Mira Sorvino also expressed regret for working in Woody Allen films. But one of the most notable Hollywood star who wasn’t a part of this was Scarlett Johansson.
Scarlett Johansson Supported Woody Allen Amidst Allegations
Scarlett Johansson worked with Woody Allen on three films, Match Point (2005), Scoop (2006), and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the actress took a stand that made everyone shocked. Contrary to the popular opinion back then, she publically said that she believed Allen. As per Johansson:
“I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime. I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. I have been very direct with him, and he’s very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.”
The Black Widow star was then asked if she feels that such an opinion will land her in hot water. The actress said, “It’s hard because it’s a time where people are very fired up, and understandably. Things needed to be stirred up, and so people have a lot of passion and a lot of strong feelings and are angry, and rightfully so. It’s an intense time.”
However, Johansson’s support meant nothing. Woody Allen has been given a cold shoulder by Hollywood. But he is still making films in Europe. His 50th film, Coup de Chance, which is a French-language film, is expected to release soon. Timothée Chalamet’s two high-profile releases, Wonka and Dune: Part 2 up for release in 2023.
A Rainy Day in New York is streaming on Netflix.
