Samuel L. Jackson holds the record as one of the longest-running tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. MCU’s Nick Fury, who was first introduced as the director of S.H.I.E.L.D (an espionage and law enforcement agency), in Iron Man (2008) post-credit scene, has continued to dazzle Marvel fans with his iconic character, dedicated to protecting the earth against any threat.
After Jackson uttered those heartbreaking words in the trailer of Secret Invasion (2023), fans have continued to wonder if the 74-year-old is done with his most consistent role. The Django Unchained actor has finally broken his silence on retiring from his fictional responsibilities after Marvel’s Captain America, Chris Evans and Black Widow, Scarlett Johansson, bid farewell to the franchise.
Samuel L. Jackson Is Addicted To Nick Fury!
Samuel L. Jackson’s 15-year-old relationship with Marvel Studios isn’t breaking yet, despite the departure of his co-stars, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson. The Die Hard with a Vengeance star, who has continued to play the role of bad*** Nick Fury in 11 MCU films, recently expressed his thoughts on retiring from his long-running role.
Jackson revealed that he is “not done” playing the character, and will be out “somehow, some way” in the new phase of MCU. The actor, who confused fans with his lines, “one last fight” in the new trailer of the upcoming series, Secret Invasion, clarified:
“I love playing him, and I love the fact that they’re opening him up to all these other possibilities and this whole life that he has. So hopefully I’m not done, and in this new phase of the MCU I’ll still be floating in and out of there somehow, some way.”
Samuel L. Jackson has appeared as Nick Fury in MCU hits like Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home. The actor will soon be back in action to stop the Skrulls, who “invade the highest spheres in the Marvel universe” in Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion (2023).
Secret Invasion Plans To Humanise Nick Fury’s Superhuman Persona
Samuel L. Jackson is all set to make a comeback in a whole new avatar of Nick Fury in Secret Invasion, which includes an ensemble cast like Ben Mendelsohn as Skrull General, Talos, Emilia Clarke as G’iah, daughter of Talos, and Kingsley Ben-Adir as Gravik, leader of radical Skrull faction.
On his comeback in the upcoming series, Samuel L. Jackson expressed that the series is an “opportunity to humanize someone” that’s widely considered as “superhuman” by those in the story and MCU fans. He said:
“All those things are part of a Nick Fury that’s invulnerable. Here you have a guy who’s showing his face, and showing his age. It’s an opportunity to humanise someone that everybody thinks is superhuman.”
Another reason why the series holds a lot of importance to Jackson is that it narrates the back story of Nick Fury, giving due credit to his work toward saving the Marvel universe. In the interview, Jackson expressed that viewers will be able to connect with Nick Fury’s soul, and delve into “how much of a toll his job actually takes on his personal life.”
As Nick Fury drops his old look, giving away his rusted leather jacket, a 74-year-old Jackson is set to introduce the real man behind the ever-strong Marvel character. While Nick Fury embarks on his “one last fight”, it’s certainly not his last time with the character.
Secret Invasion launches on June 21, 2023, on Disney+.
