“I’m just gonna hold on to that chip”: Jerry Seinfeld Tricked Chris Rock to Join $293M Film by Calling it a Steven Spielberg Movie That Left Comedian Perplexed

Jerry Seinfeld, the American comedian, has been known to trick people with his humor. Chris Rock, the comedian-turned-actor was also one of the several actors that got tricked by Jerry Seinfeld. Starring in the 2007 family/comedy movie titled the Bee Movie, Rock had a hilarious prank played on him.

Talking about it in an interview, it was revealed that Jerry Seinfeld had apparently told Chris Rock that he will get to meet visionary director Steven Spielberg on the sets of Bee Movie. The American comedian did not get to meet Spielberg after all and joked that Seinfeld now owes him one.

Chris Rock Was Tricked Into Joining The Bee Movie

During the production of the movie, an ensemble cast of Jerry Seinfeld, Patrick Wilson, Ray Liotta and more had already been attached to the movie. Since Jerry Seinfeld was the originator of the movie, he wanted Chris Rock to lend his voice to the animated film.

At the time of the initial pitching, Seinfeld told Chris Rock that visionary director Steven Spielberg was also attached to the movie. That seemed the primary reason why the Grown Ups actor agreed to join the movie. To his disappointment, Spielberg never joined the movie and Rock had no other choice but to voice his character in the 2007 film.

Talking about it in an interview with Collider, the comedian joked that Seinfeld owes him one now and that he will cash it in whenever he figures it out himself.

“No, he told me what it was, but he actually told me Spielberg was going to be in it and when I get there, there is no Spielberg. So, he kind of owes me. I don’t know how. I’m just gonna hold on to that chip and just figure out when I get to cash it in,”

Although it was not Jerry Seinfeld’s fault, since director Steven Spielberg was indeed more excited about the Bee Movie than Seinfeld himself. Speilberg never joined the movie, however, but was quite happy with the final product.

When we say it wasn’t Jerry Seinfeld’s fault, it’s because it was actually Steven Spielberg who pushed the Seinfeld actor to pursue his passion for making the Bee Movie. In a different interview, Seinfeld revealed that during a normal meal with Spielberg, it was the visionary director who was excited about the Bee Movie more than Seinfeld himself.

“This was not a meeting. It was just a social dinner and it was an offhanded remark of something I thought might be a funny comment in conversation at the dinner to make him laugh. I didn’t want to make the movie. He’s the one who thought it was a movie. I didn’t think it was a movie,”

The movie went on to receive a rating of 6.1/10 on IMDB and a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Bee Movie, voiced by Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock is available to stream on The Roku Channel.
