Slate is the name of the dog actor who played Cosmo, and on the set of the movie, it seemed that Slate had an especially kind attitude.

Meanwhile, it’s important to point out that Slate didn’t appear in Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3. Instead, the character Cosmo was created using sophisticated CGI techniques. To assist the special effects crew with visual cues, Slate assumed the role of Cosmo as a stand-in and served as a point of reference for factors such as Cosmo’s proportions, location, and lighting.

Yet, the presence of Slate on set proved to be a delightful yet distracting quirk for Gunn, as Slate seemed to form an affectionate bond with the director.

Stephanie Ceretti, the Guardians special effects supervisor, revealed in a recent Movieweb interview that Slate showed an endearing desire to interact with the filmmaker just as the cameras were about to record cinematic magic. She disclosed,

“James loves dogs. So James would start playing with Slate and then by the time we were rolling, Slate was like, Oh, I’m gone. I don’t know. I want to play.”

The cast and crew were also in amazement at this dog diversion as they observed how Gunn’s obsession with dogs skillfully integrated concepts and emotions into the movie, adding an unexpectedly intriguing layer to the Guardians of the Galaxy team’s cosmic adventures.

Yet it’s important to remember that this canine diversion happened after Gunn became co-CEO of the DC Universe.
