Hollywood star Jamie Foxx finally seems to be recovering from the mystery illness that put him out of work indefinitely during the filming of Back in Action with Cameron Diaz. Foxx’s fans and well-wishers are hoping for the actor to make a full recovery back to the film set to take on his trademark challenging roles that he is famous for.
Jamie Foxx’s crowning glory moment came with his Oscar win for his intense and powerful performance in Ray. The actor took up an even more difficult character post his Academy Award honor in the 2009 drama The Soloist which almost led to him breaking down physically and emotionally.
Jamie Foxx Faced Extreme Mental Challenges During The Filming Of The Soloist
Fresh from his Oscar win, Jamie Foxx signed on to another difficult and challenging role that pushed him to the extreme physically and mentally. In The Soloist, the actor played Juilliard-trained cellist Nathaniel Ayers, a musician suffering from schizophrenia who ultimately decided to live in LA’s homeless enclave on Skid Row. In preparation for the role, the Marvel star completely transformed himself into the character through his manner of speech, clothes, and body language.
In addition, Foxx also admitted to taking a drug enhancement that made him lose tons of weight for the character. This extreme form of method acting took a huge toll on the star who went through a mental breakdown on set that led to him hallucinating about his rough childhood in sanitoriums where he had first-hand experience witnessing mentally disturbed young teenagers. All of these memories made the Ray star imagine that he may in fact have schizophrenia like his character, Nathanial Ayers. Recalling the challenging period during which he shared his fears with his manager, Foxx told the Toxic Anonymous Podcast,
“At one point I had to get up and use the restroom and when I looked down at my hands, my hands looked exactly like his [Ayers]. I’m going out of my f—g head. I had to take medication. I had to get on something. We’re all artists, and we all go different places in our minds, but I feel, if I were to lose my mind, I would lose everything.”
While Foxx confessed that his experience in The Soloist was scary and disturbing, he also admitted that these challenges that took actors down difficult paths ultimately resulted in powerful and heartfelt performances.
