Henry Cavill has portrayed many iconic characters over the years. His ability to not only look the part but become those people with his stellar acting skills, has turned him into one of the most sought-after actors of recent times in Hollywood.
Be it in The Count of Monte Cristo in his earlier days, saving the Earth as Superman, Geralt of Rivia aka The Witcher, and even Sherlock Holmes, his bag is full of remarkable performances.
And although there are a few more roles that seem to be in the pipeline in the coming years, there is one titular role he is extremely excited to reprise. That is, of course, Sherlock Holmes, as he admitted in an interview last year.
Henry Cavill hints at Sherlock Holmes spin-off
Henry Cavill first took on the detective’s hat in Netflix’s Enola Holmes. It stars Millie Bobby Brown as the youngest Holmes sister, who is on her way to follow her brother’s footsteps and make a career out of solving mysteries.
Henry Cavill of course being Sherlock Holmes had the work cut out for him, even with his short cameo as a protective brother looking after his sister. He reprised his role in the second instalment although with a much more impactful role.
However, one thing that remained the same was in the history of fiction, Sherlock Holmes and Cavill by extension, played a supporting role at the peak of their careers.
Cavill, though, seemed to enjoy this fresh experience even if it meant taking a beating after crushing opponents in Superman and The Witcher. He noted while speaking on this in an interview last year,
“It goes in line with being a supporting actor. As a supporting actor in this, I’m supporting an older story…It can’t just be up to you. So it’s novel to be one of the players in support of that, rather than relying on everyone else to be the one selling that.”
However, portraying such an iconic character, even in a supporting role comes with the hope of there being another project down the line that focuses more on him. Cavill explained while talking about those expectations,
“I do know what you mean, yes. I think there are so many options there. The important thing for me is making sure that I can give everything I need to give to every one of the characters that I play. As we know, I’m getting busier, and my plate is becoming slightly more full, so I think it’s all about making sure that I have the time to serve the characters as I need to.”
This is especially intriguing, as the post-credit scene in the second movie already kind of hinted at a possible spin-off featuring Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. As a result, it will be interesting to see if that really comes to happen down the line as many are holding hopes for.
Henry Cavill is booked and busy after being rebuffed by DC
Last year brought saddening news for Henry Cavill’s fans when the actor announced that he won’t be returning as Superman anymore. This was especially disheartening as just a couple of months before he announced his return through an Instagram post after his surprise cameo in Black Adam.
The problem was, he did not really fit James Gunn‘s vision for Superman, as the director is gearing up for the launch of his Gods and Monsters: Chapter One projects with Superman: Legacy in 2025. Not only that, but Cavill is also getting replaced in The Witcher, after the third season by Liam Hemsworth.
As a result, fans have been worried about the actor’s future, even though he seemed to have taken things in stride as he claimed in his Instagram post last year, “The changing of the guard is something that happens,” because, “That’s life.”
As such, his confirmation that he is indeed quite busy and has a lot on his plate because of upcoming projects seems to have given them a lot of hope. There have been quite a few upcoming big projects that his name is already associated with.
For example, Argylle, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Warhammer 40,000, and even a rumored reboot of Highlander. And now, after his statement regarding a possible Sherlock Holmes-based spin-off of Enola Holmes, his fans seem to be over the moon as they wait for The Witcher season 3 next month.
The Witcher season 3 releases on June 29th on Netflix. Although Argylle is expected to release this year, a potential date has not been disclosed yet.
