Director Quentin Tarantino is the quintessential maverick of Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino Dissed Sam Mendes’ 1917
In 2019, Quentin Tarantino’s old-school Hollywood drama Once Upon A Time in Hollywood competed with Sam Mendes’s war film 1917 in multiple categories at the Academy Awards. Mendes gained popularity for using a single-cut technique to shoot the entire film which ultimately went on to get top honors at the Oscars for Best Cinematography. But Quentin Tarantino begged to differ. Responding to comments that 1917 should have swept all awards that year, the director replied with his opinion on the one-shot take saying,
“You’re too impressed by that! I’m not saying they do a bad job of that… But if you’re going to do it, really f*king do it. Go 15 minutes per f*king take.”
Tarantino went on to add that he was an admirer of the film and Mendes’ work in it but argued that it used too many invisible cuts that should have instead been consolidated more firmly.
What Does Quentin Tarantino Have In Store For 2023?
In November 2022, Quentin Tarantino mentioned publically that his tenth film will be his last as a director. The script written by him titled The Movie Critic will hit the floors in the fall of 2023. While not many details have been divulged by Tarantino about the story, inside sources have stated that the narrative will reportedly be set in late 1970s Los Angeles with a female lead at its center.
There are also speculations that the story could be the biography of Pauline Kael, one of the most influential movie critics of all time. Kael who was also an essayist and novelist was known for her steely fights with editors and filmmakers. Quentin Tarantino has openly spoken about his admiration and respect for Pauline Kael and her work making it more of a possibility that he could honor her through his film. Apart from this, the director is also allegedly reported to be working on an 8-part television series in 2023. The filmmaker didn’t divulge any narrative or production details about the proposed project.
