The legendary star, Sharon Stone is renowned for her iconic performances in movies like Casino and Basic Instinct. The actress has never shied away from speaking out against Hollywood’s harsh realities.
Well, Stone often shared her thoughts on how her career as an actress has been complicated: whether she earlier talked about ageism in the business or even how her activism for AIDS has affected her career.
Recently, the actress, 65, talked openly about a health scare that almost killed her and how it affected her ability to land acting roles again in the entertainment industry. She also revealed that Hollywood has not given her any roles for 20 years as a result of her stroke, providing a glimpse into her challenging acting past.
In case you were unaware, the seasoned actress’ life was completely turned upside down when she suffered a stroke back in 2001. She had a “1% chance of surviving and had a nine-day brain bleed,” which even convinced doctors she wouldn’t.
The Diagnosis That Affected Sharon Stone’s Hollywood Career
Hollywood’s glittering world often hides a darker side, where even the biggest stars may feel abandoned due to the fleeting nature of fame. Sharon Stone recently shared a heartbreaking revelation about her nearly fatal stroke in 2001 in a candid and heartfelt interview.
In revealing a painful chapter in her life, the actress said that for nearly two decades, after having a stroke that changed her life, she was ignored and overlooked by people in the industry.
The actress who starred in critically acclaimed films like Basic Instinct and Casino shared the agony she felt as she battled her health problems and felt abandoned by the industry that had once embraced her.
The 65-year-old actress revealed in a recent interview with THR:
“I recovered for seven years, and I haven’t had jobs since. When it first happened, I didn’t want to tell anybody because you know if something goes wrong with you, you’re out. Something went wrong with me — I’ve been out for 20 years. I haven’t had jobs. I was a very big movie star at one point in my life.”
Although the mother of three had received an Academy Award nomination for Casino, the actress further claimed the projects she worked on after having a stroke were nowhere near as significant as they had been before. She further added:
“I broke a lot of glass ceilings on the top of my head. I want to tell you that it hurt. It hurt to get paid. It hurt to fight the studio heads. It hurt to make boundaries — boundaries about who could come in my trailer and what they could ask for; boundaries about the fact that I didn’t want to sign my contract in my makeup trailer on the day that I started a show. It hurt to say that I had, like any corporation, the opportunity to have my lawyer read my contract and that I didn’t have to start the show signing my unread contract in the makeup trailer.”
She Disapproved of ‘Anti-Woke Bullsh*t’
Sharon Stone’s recovery from the stroke took a long time, and by the time she was able to return to work, Hollywood appeared to be done with the veteran actress. Speaking up for herself, this experience “has caused me a lot of problems in the business” and occasionally prevented her from landing a job.
The Sliver actress continued by outlining the work she has been doing for the World Health Organization and the UN. Stone also emphasized the need for people with different viewpoints to demand a place in this industry.
“It is important to me that your diversity does not get wiped out by this anti-woke b*llshit idea in our country. This democratic experiment means a lot. It means a lot. The extreme pushing of a controlled government society — whatever you want to call it, whatever people want to label it — is also an experiment. It doesn’t mean that it is happening. It means that it is an experiment to see if you will eat it. Will you eat a controlled government? Will you eat a controlled studio system? What will you eat — or will you stand up and be counted?”
The actress shot to fame after appearing in the popular erotic thriller (Basic Instinct) in 1992, but as she adjusted to her newfound fame, she found that life was very different off-screen.
Sharon Stone was last seen in the 2022 American drama film, Beauty, which was directed by Andrew Dosunmu.
